Fi Channon (on lead vocals) and I (on BV's) composed this song as a showcase for Zoe Sugg (AKA Zoella) when we heard that the rights to her book, "Girl Online", had been bought by a film company who intended to make a movie version.

Sadly, the movie ended up, like so many, stuck in development but, if it ever does make it into production, here is the song for the end credits!

The idea for this song hit me back in the late 90s when I worked on an American summer camp. One of the boys I was looking after had a giant crush on a girl and thought nobody knew. He was wrong. Everyone did. But, unfortunately, she was in love with the quarterback on her high school football team. 

The idea stuck with me and, last year, this song popped out. I wanted it to be a hybrid of Simple Plan style skater rock and the pop catchability of One Direction with an American high school feel. I hope the production blends all of these ingredients into a delicious musical cake!

Bleeding Out

This song was written way back in 2004 and was the first of many collaborations I wrote with my good friend, Paul Alexander. We entered it into the UK Songwriting Competition that year and were stoked to see it finish 10th in a field of over 3000 entries. 

We commissioned Sal Salvador to produce a more updated version and he nailed it, adding a modern dance/pop feel. 

We'd be pitching it to Westlife if they were still around. See if you can guess at which point they'd get up off their stools...

Something a little more funky to my usual stuff. Whitney Houston meets Little Mix. Dig the bass on this. Try not to pull a neck muscle every time I hear it! ;o)

Limbo

Sometimes life doesn't always turn out the way you expected but you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and try again... or, at least, that's the theory. This song is about trying to convince yourself that this theory is valid, that you can turn it into practice and discover happier times in the future.

Dead Again

It is no secret, but maybe seems so to some, that I have battled with depression for over a decade. I have known that writing songs, even before my diagnosis, was a way that I tried to process both the happy and sad events in my life. 

I always knew that I wanted to write a song about my struggles with mental health but wanted it to be accessible to others who have maybe battled and survived other kinds of adversity, therefore I wrote the lyrics deliberately ambiguous so the listener can interpret the words in their own way.

I don't have all the answers but I know music and my writing has helped me to come to terms with my condition and survive. I hope this song makes you realise that you can too.

Survivor

Life doesn't always end up where you think. The road to Hell, and indeed Heaven, is paved with good intentions. However, sometimes these good intentions don't always translate to positive action. This song is about recognising that there is always time to make a difference, to believe in yourself and to have faith that others will believe in you too. As with many of my songs, it is a note to self as much as a call to arms for others.

Walk This Road With Me

I don't believe anyone deliberately sets out to hurt another but, sometimes, that's the way things work out.

A time comes when you maybe start to realise that the person you have chosen to be with is actually not the right person for you, but also: once the anger fades, the pain subsides and the hurt lessens, you come to recognise that you were not the right person for them either. 

This song is about that moment. You want something better, something happier for yourself... but also for them as well. 

There is no such thing as hindsight when it comes to decision making. You can only judge your actions at the time you take them. Looking back, especially if those original actions led you to heartbreak, only perpetuates the pain and undermines your ability to learn from mistakes made. So pick yourself up, dust yourself off and look to the horizon for what lies ahead.

Open Land

Sometimes laughter is the best medicine... unless, of course, you have diarrhoea then something like Immodium is probably best.

All jokes aside, with 'Girl Power' I just wanted to write an uptempo, fun, three minute(or thereabouts!) pop song with lyrics that brought a bit of a chuckle for a change. I always had the idea of having it sound a bit like The Fratellis or The Kooks... a little more Brit Pop than my usual American leanings.

I love what Sal did with the production and I hope it makes you smile and tap your feet which is what I always intended it to do.

Girl Power

This was written some time ago but I have always felt it had something special. It was one of those compositions that almost wrote itself, a synergy of lyric and music rather than one being created in isolation from the other. 

As with, "Girl Power", I love the humour of the words but also the sincere attempts to conjure up that intoxicating feeling which only 'love' can illicit. That rare moment when both your head and heart are, for once, on the same page and encourage you to commit to do (almost) anything for the object of your affection. As cliche as it might be, you are lost yet you are found. You cannot imagine ever being without this person as, in all reality, you believe they are actually a part of you.

However, fundamentally, it still remains a fun, love song which Tommy and his awesome team at Nash Tracks capture exquisitely.

If You Left Me Girl
