For #8, the final cassette in the series, I'm excited to feature work from my longtime friend, John Gasper. John and I met shortly after I moved to New York in 2010 and quickly bonded over our mutual love for Scott Walker and Laurie Anderson. That soon led us to perform in various free jazz/noise ensembles over the years across the city. John has what can only described as a "boundless" well of creative energy, which makes him a strikingly generous collaborator.

While a talented actor, over the years he's found creative freedom as a sound designer for numerous plays in the experimental theater scene of NYC. After seeing his recent work in a performance called 'Events,' directed by his wife, Sarah Blush, I was moved by a soundscape that'd taken place mid-show. When he mentioned that it was his, I immediately asked about doing a tape together.

These tracks were composed for theatrical performances in NYC since 2017, as John describes:

"All tracks were made for theatrical performances, to be heard alongside action, for a time and space defined and ephemeral. For best experience: listen while watching someone doing something, from a certain distance, at appropriate volume."

Describing his new mixtape as a collection of "musical detritus", or music that had to be attempted (and ultimately discarded) so that more popular acts could go on to have success, @brandon-wilner (a.k.a. Unscented DJ) has offered up a collection of unpretentious and "unprecious" club cuts that feel just as at home on the dance floor as they do in the living room, beach, or campsite. 

Like his contribution to @argotmusic's mixtape series before this, Brandon's thoughtful approach to the decks has once again supplemented summertime with another blissed-out companion piece. Happy listening!
