@Wordcolour returns to Houndstooth with ‘Ratios III’, the third instalment of their ‘Ratios’ series. Released in 2023, Ratios I and II kick-started a series of two-track EPs of adventurous, experimental club music. Ratios III continues this trend whilst also being Wordcolour’s most peak-time offering to date.

‘Crush’ (04th Sept) is a 130bpm cut which features an infectious vocal set against a pounding polyrhythmic kick. The sub-heavy groove builds in energy before turning on its head half-way through, rocketing upwards through a polyrhythmic shift into a 170ish 4/4 beatdown with a vicious bassline.

‘Rapture’ (Sept 13th) sees Wordcolour turn their attention to psychedelic loopy techno. Diving deeper into microtonality, Wordcolour reimagines the music and sound design written for Andrea Khora’s 2024 short film of the same name.

Pearson Sound returns to his Hessle Audio label with Which Way Is Up, a 4 track EP showcasing a range of textures and tempos with soundsystem pressure as the anchor. The 808-laced 'Hornet' kicks things off with a sound palette inspired as much by '80s Miami as '10s London. 'Twister' dials up the energy with a jagged lead and scattered breakbeats pulling in opposing directions, while the steppers pulse of 'Slingshot' evokes formative experiences at Subdub in Leeds. The EP is brought to a close with the blissed out title track 'Which Way Is Up', whose arpeggios dance around each other until they fizzle to breaking point.

Woozy’s annual WZY4.5 compilation summit gathers for its fourth installment, celebrating 9 artists of dubwise disposition that maintains the label and its founder EMA’s spellbinding tradition in futurist soundsystem music. No Sir, Maude Vôs, Jossy Mitsu, Chewlie, Beaabea, Mantra, Introspekt, Ila Brugal and Honeydrip all feature for another bumper showcase of ambitious club sounds.

WZY4.5’s welcoming address looks to No Sir’s Dilate, an elastic-shock of icy swagger that rudely snaps under the serious sub pressure. Maude Vôs’ Faerie Ring gurgles with psy-eye
wonder amidst its half-time hypnosis, before the chromatic piston-breaks of Arena bounce around Jossy Mitsu’s irresistible kinetics. Chewlie’s Blaze Of Sobriety is a crooked stepper of wide-eyed abstraction that swivels on an addictive head-nod lurch, while Pixelate’s taut trip through Beaabea’s stern kick-drum ballistics offers some dastardly club drama. Mantra then signals the rave siren, meditating on a percussive half step before igniting the jungle (dub) tekno fervour of Bedrock. Introspekt’s naughty 2-stepper Digital throbs in a see-saw of LFO menace and crisp swung-drum mechanics, before Moth’s blunted dancefloor haze illuminates Ila Brugal’s effortlessly rolling groove. On closing remarks is Honeydrip with Aspire, a zooted stepper of heavenly breakbeat joy that skanks sub-heavy style to its and WZY4.5’s glorious conclusion.

Following on from the House-infused punch of her Peach Discs release in June, Bristol’s Daisy Moon treats us to a shapeshifting debut on Timedance - entering a new era with a splash sure to be felt in most abyssal zones.

‘Shadow Of Silhouettes’ showcases a singular exploration of tough yet scintillating sounds, between wiggy electro, bass-laden grooves and inspired bursts of FWD techno-pop.

In this diverse body of work, Daisy’s vocals are the glue tying things together. They appear like sonic silhouettes, abstracted through sound design and unveiling a taste for the experimental. In other moments they are stripped from their abstract form and float above the surface, revealing Daisy Moon’s blossoming talent for ear-worm melodies.

The fourth instalment in Pev's Pulse series finds him further widening the scope of his sound as he touches on the distinct energies which inform his unique strain of soundsystem techno. 

'Pulse XIII' deals in stark, tweaked-out acid lines cutting through a taut drum machine backbone, balanced out with a sci-fi pad which lets you know its Pev at the controls. 'Pulse XIV' finds him dialling up his jungle roots once more for a dreamy excursion into diced up breaks, cascading synths and dislocated piano chord chops. There's a deeper dub techno spirit to 'Pulse XV' and 'Pulse XVI' deals in the raw, bleep-informed jack tracks that have started to creep into Pev's sound as the Pulse series has evolved.
