DJ KARL COTBRUM has proven to be without a doubt one of the few DJ’s in the Mexican electronic scene to have a style of his own. Karl’s passion for a great number of musical genres has indeed shaped the way he interprets music. Karl’s energetic, passionate persona has helped him create a rather unique and involving sound that has consolidated him as one of Latin America’s top DJ’s. Karl has dedicated most of his life to music and has been DJ’ing for over 18 years now. His experience and superb style have led him to land constant club residencies as well as international presentations.
Karl’s story is a precocious one; by the late 80’s and at age 8 he began collecting cassettes and 12’’ long plays. Once Karl had analyzed each and every one of his records thoroughly he threw together his own mixes and remixes at parties.
1995 became an extremely important year in Karl’s existence; due to the fact that he obtained his first residency at a near home club named “Gilce”. Karl’s residency lasted 3 years and during this period of time his skills as a DJ grew tremendously and catapulted him into the underground rave scene in Mexico City.
After headlining a very abundant number of rave parties in Mexico City, and due to unexpected events in his life Karl moved to New York City.While in the big apple he got at Eightball record store. Eightball proved to be a great influence in Karl’s life. All of this because of it’s huge variety of dance records that draws all sorts of crowd, from ravers to thick-necked bridge-and-tunnel types to average-Joe DJs decked out in J. Crew. Perhaps because it doesn't specialize in one minute subgenre, as many dance music stores do Karl was able to experiment dance music’s richness first hand and furthermore was compelled to absorb a large variety of sounds and styles. Karl’s nowadays swagger and melodic wealth was indeed shaped by living and breathing dance music in the U.S.
DJ Karl got to meet and exchange numerous points of views about dance music with DJ’s such as Pete Lopez ( a local NY DJ) who eventually asked Karl to play at GrooveJetand it was there where Karl’s style started evolving and changing into the dark, sexy, melodic groove that is Karl’s trademark.
Once Karl moved back to Mexico City he landed a residency at a pioneer dance music club in the Mexican scene “303 Club” and started making a name for himself playing at different Mexico City important underground clubs; Bar House, The Pervert Lounge, and Dobermann to mention a few. 
DJ Karl lined up at massive dance music events such as “ACA WORLD SOUND FESTIVAL” and started participating and winning in DJ contests. In a 1 year span Karl won: The Axe DJ Contest, The Ministry of Sound Contest that was put together by one of Mexico’s leading dance music labels (Mas+label) and winning that got him a first place award that consisted in him going to Ibiza and playing at legendary “PACHA” for a crowd of over three thousand people.
In 2004 and for a short period of time Karl took over the DJ booth in world known exclusive “CHEETAH BAR” that has been catalogued in a great number of occasions as one of Mexico’s leading bars in terms of music and decoration by Donde Ir Magazine.
After playing at CHEETAH BAR for a short period of time Karl was snatched away by Jorge K. (Owner of epoch setting “DOBBY CLUB”) and was offeredwhat eventually would become one of Karl’s longest residencies (6 years; 2004-2010). Karl’s 10 to 16 marathon-like sets hypnotized and blew people’s minds with mesmerizing grooves and sounds that people found completely different from what other DJ’s played in the afterhour Mexico City scene. Dobby Club’s atmosphere became utterly trend setting and unique since Karl became the resident there. Throughout those 6 years Karl played gigs in both clubs as well as radio stations in Colombia (B Lounge, La Kasa, Wild Club, La X electrónica ) Miami ( AX Store ) Czech Republic ( X-MAX DanceHall ) and Mar del Plata in Argentina ( El Dorado ).
Karl has travelled the world with his music and has developed a quite ample scope of musical preferences ranging from Disco to Rock and R&amp;B. Karl has piled up a huge collection of white label records, rarities, new and old songs that have allowed him to create a very special avant-garde blend of music that allows him to connect with people at a level that many DJ’s can only dream of.
