SYMPHONY NO_1: A Teleological Fantasy-Dolby Digital

The musical context layers represent Mother Nature’s dislike of disruptive delays in harmonic resonance and lack of organic empathy. Saturn is symbolic of a karmic imprint that emerges within consciousness relating to the natural world and the impact of human activity on its condition resulting from individually and collectively evolved experiences. It represents challenges carried from past incarnations from which our destiny evolves. Thus, “Saturn’s Return” is an astrological time of reckoning where we take responsibility for entire life cycles. It is a period of great transformation and enhanced awareness of who we are, our inherent goals, and our evolution patterns.

This symphony was commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and written from 1984 through 1985; my second NEA commission. I received this one as I arrived in New York City for graduate study.

Symphony No.1: A Teleological Fantasy is a one-movement work composed 40 years ago - as a National Endowment for the Arts composer’s commission. The score was written in 1984 upon my arrival in New York City in pursuit of my Ph.D. in music composition at the CUNY Graduate Center. It uses my melodic/pan-harmonic "compositional coding system" based on seeds I evolved spontaneously through improvisation, musical self-analysis, and codified in my book, Exploratory Musicism: Ideas for Spontaneous Composition ©2012. This significant composer line of support eventually disappeared shortly after 1990, when the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) defunded several artists’ work when Congress amended the statute governing federal funding for the arts to include considerations of “general standards of decency and respect for the diverse beliefs of the American public.” This Finale-based recording is released on the composition’s 40th anniversary. My handwritten score was carefully digitalized by My Sheet Music Transcriptions digital music notation services, a team of 40+ professional musicians with headquarters in Australia.

In 1893, the mathematician Meissel from Kiel posed a very peculiar 
example of the three body problem, which is now known as the 
Pythagorean problem. Translated from the original German: 
Three point-like particles attract each other according to Newton's 
Universal Law of Gravitation. The masses of the particles are m1=3, 
m2=4, and m3=5; they are initially located at the apexes of a right 
triangle with sides 3, 4, and 5, so that the corresponding masses and 
sides are opposite. The particles are free to move in the plane of the 
triangle and are at rest initially. The problem was finally solved by Victor 
Szebehely in 1967, using a high-speed digital 
computer and the mathematical technique of 
"two-body regularization."
