For its next release, the resurgent Deeplay Digital offers up three new versions of a classic and previously unreleased (on 12” at least) disco-fried Giorgio Moroder track in the form of ‘Utopia – Me Giorgio’. The remixer is Opilec Music boss, I-Robots, who has reworked classic Moroder material before and who is a huge fan of the disco and electronic music pioneer Einzelgänger.

The concept of this release was simply to create longer versions of the track that was originally included in the From Here To Eternity partially mixed album – incredibly no one else has officially done this since the original release date in 1977. Importantly, though, because the track is so seminal, the remixes are all hugely sympathetic affairs that don’t change the atmosphere or intentions of the original artist.

Up first is the ‘I-Robots 1977 Reconstruction’, which has just seen the original extended from 3:23 minutes to almost 7 minutes (all these reconstructions are long). The result is a fantastic thing that is now perfectly suited to club play with fulsome modern production, a revisited version that is a perfect reinterpretation maintaining the spirit of the ’77 original.

For the ‘I-Robots 2014 Tape Reconstruction’, the remixer had a dream that he found an old original Moroder tape in a flea market and used it to beef up this track. The addition of analog tape background noise gives the mix a dirty and dusty vintage sound and as such it now has a strong and powerful impact with infectious drums, frazzled synth lines and plenty of meaty disco dazzle.

Finally, The ‘I-Robots 2014 Reconstruction’ is the clean version of the Tape Reconstruction with a powerful tech-house beat underpinning it, making it the version most suited to heavy dancefloor usage.

The vinyl release includes only the 1977 and the 2014 Tape Reconstructions and is handled exclusively by Opilec Music.

As a kid growing up in Illinois' tucked-away capital of Springfield, Justin Cudmore played the drums at home and in school as a jazz percussionist. In his college days Justin dove into electronic music, workshopping new-wave influenced beats in bands and DJing parties. Currently, Justin is a fixture across Brooklyn, popping up on dance floors and behind booths, where he has spun records at his Hotmix parties along with Mike Servito and Gunnar Haslam. 

“Crystal” is Cudmore’s debut 12” single. Raw, rough and ready to rumble, “Crystal” marries snaking acid lines and bouncy grooves to a sample from cult underground film classic 'The Queen'.  On the flip is Detroit-bred and Bunker resident DJ Mike Servito’s “730 Reshape”, that gives the wiggly worm vibe harkening back to the early days of Transmat, Warp and the minimalism of Dan Bell's DBX project. L.I.E.S. mainstay Gunnar Haslam provides his “Dekalb Avenue Remix” made while living in New York, a modular synth cruise with the top down. All tracks have been mastered and EQed for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley and labels are as pink as Crystal’s lipstick.

The Comeback Kid

Featuring phenomenal fecundity and remarkable talent, Konstantin Isaev aka Volta Cab, is one of the few russian artists, was able to win real recognition on the world stage. Discography measured in dozens of original tracks and remixes, mostly vinyl, including Isaev, Tokma and Common People aliases. Among the musical landmarks of Volta Cab are, on the one hand – a proven classic disco and detroit house like Motor City Drum Ensemble; on the other hand, Volta Cab’s music does not have any limits, flirting with lo-fi, hip-hop, stupefying balearic and chicago house chords, futuristic 2-step and post- jazz side of the garage. Only he can simultaneously publish a proto-jungle at UK Hypercolour, and mutant disco at respected label Eskimo. He prefers to play live-acts with his own eclectic vision of electronic music.

With  forthcoming releases on Nein, Bordello A Parigi and Dalmata Daniel, Volta Cab is one of the producers to watch from East Europe.

Italian label @cosmic-rhythm-records made their debut last year with an EP by Michele Lamacchia under his @rhytmh-of-paradise alias, a fusion of early 90’s house, disco and 80’s electronica. Since then, their releases have gone from strength to strength and for such a new label, have made a great impact. Their sound could be described as a fond throwback to a golden age of house with an avant-garde twist.

Their latest offering is an EP by Loss Of Gravity, a collaboration between Lamacchia and Nicola Loporchio,  entitled "Sotterranea" (roughly translated as 'underground'). Today we premiere the opening track ‘Intensity’. This track has an air of familiarity to it as the opening chords melt into your subconscious. Layers of percussion and a pulsating bass line are added into the fray, along with some lush melancholic melodies and pads that the godfather Larry Heard would be proud of. Intensity would be a perfect fit for a warm-up set, a 3AM slot to break up the banger tracks, a laid back podcast or even an open top car journey along the coast.

Plenty of producers try and recreate the magic of deep house tracks in the early 90’s but this duo have done a fine job, breaking that all too familiar cliche to create a record of true class. The future continues to look bright for Cosmic Rhythm if this form continues.

Quartet Series is back with the Bodybuilder Series after Scott Franka’s popped the new offshoot’s cherry in the spring. For this sophomore release, Nachtbraker sourced some serious production talent from Eindhoven, The Netherlands. While it’s the Portamento Boys’ first ever release, they have the chutzpah to go full-frontal Italo and pull it off with great panache with a moody and energetic EP. The record is characterised by catchy melodies, quirky vibes and warm analog grooves. Connoisseurs will instantly recognise the TR-606 and 707, SH-101, Ensoniq Esq1 and a Casio CZ-3000. The Italo express jets off and takes no prisoners with “Been There Come Back”, a banging workout paying homage to the glorious 80’s. Shoulder-pad boogie anyone? “Portamento 101” feels like you’re playing the 1986 version of Outrun on your Sega. On the flip “Final Dinner” serves up some fine Asian-Italian fusion Cuisine, and finally the P Boys drop “Eighty Ain’t”, acknowledging that even though the tracks are clearly inspired by the 80s, they didn’t just emulate, but innovate instead. Now let’s introduce the Portamento Boys. Some say it al began when the first episode of "Jacques, zo is het wel weer genoeg geweest" was aired on the Dutch box back in the second half of 1988. Others say it was the respect he got for robbing the local Albert Heijn with the famous saying, "Hallo, Jumbo" that made him end up in solitary confinement. His colleagues say he never let go of Piet, his last undercover assignment. But the only one to help him in these times of mental distress, identity crises and general psychosomatic turmoil was Koos. After all these years there is a mantra to find in Piet’s life that keeps him going. He managed himself, stayed on his feet and let his life live him instead of the other way around: 'I never chose this life, and neither did Koos'. To keep personalities as Piet alive, Koos helped him form an undercover band. Problem might be that they have switched names more often than an octave switches in harmony from scale to scale. That’s why they return as the Portamento Boys. Always modulating about and in between. Nothing appears as it seems. Andiamo!
