Following their debut EP on Rush Hour, this 3 track limited edition 10" on blue vinyl starts with the title track "Oceania". Breakbeats meets ethereal chants and hazy aquatic synths, like a lost AFX record from the early 90s. Next up, "Atlantis Force Code" - euphoric house chords submerged by a wet blanket of swirling pads. Lastly, one strictly for freaked-out late night dancefloors - "Xosheeba" - jacking beats, a tough bassline and a gnarled phantom vocal stabs.

Roberto Clementi’s sparkling new EP spans a diversity of styles, all imprinted with his own unique sound. This relative newcomer to Soma has proved a great match for the iconic Glasgow label, producing consistently high-quality tracks. His innovation and vision are clear on this single, which is his second release through Soma.

The EP kicks off with Viper, which ignites the release from the first bar. The imposing bass hints at a darker sound and the thunderous synth creates a powerful sense of atmosphere. A dubby, industrial feel spreads through the track. These undertones are capitalised on with the electrifying break-downs and drops running through, all lifted with the brushed tones of the intricate drum patterns. This is a fantastic start to the EP and a track to get lost in. 

Retro Chords is the next track and takes a different direction with an endorphin drenched and upbeat sound. Ecstatic, bright synths and ethereal organs help to build a warm melodic structure to the track and conjure a pleasing sense of nostalgia within this retrospective. Elements of Balearic beats and heady, celebratory times are key to the sound of this stylish track.

Overrule adds another fresh perspective to the release. A staunch powerful rhythm drives this track from the outset and makes an immediate impression. The sounds melt into liquid synths and delicate space and this balance of fluid melody and bold rhythm make this an exciting track. 

Mesm completes this expansive album and extends the dub elements. The echoing refrains spiral off and merge with the sweeping backdrop panning and swirling harmoniously. The strong rhythm and melody line provide a powerful anchor to these intricate sounds and during the track energetic, pumping beats heat it up creating a raucous mix. As the track fades out it becomes sparser and darker and flows away intriguingly.   

This EP is the perfect expression of Clementi and showcases his talents as a producer, combining great skill with distinctive, fresh ideas to create a striking new sound, which, signals a bright and prolific future with Soma.

"We are brought down a notch in the middle of the EP, where we see more playful elements of synthesis come in on the sparse and spacious ‘Birthday’. Taking another notch down tempo-wise with ‘Fornia’ and ‘Ivory Heart’, AH takes us on a trip through the deepest caves of wonder. It’s probably not the best way to describe the music and dissect it, but these two tracks are like walking through underground caverns filled with natural treasures, glistening minerals and crystals. If that doesn’t make sense, and you’ve played Ocarina Of Time, think of the Great Fairy Fountains, just on a grander scale. A brilliant effort and an amazing release."

Little Wanderer

R-Zone is a new label launched by Global Darkness. Who is involved isn't exactly a secret, those who feel so inclined can piece the information together quite easily. It is however irrelevant to the concept of R-Zone, which would like to shift the focus away from namedropping and perception based on hype around individual artists and bring it back where it belongs; in the lap of the music.

The sounds exhibited across each track are fresh offerings that combine brightly coloured synths, swirling pads and non-standard beats into captivating and kaleidoscopic soundscapes that constantly evolve from start to finish. A cosmic, intergalactical energy pervades each release, transporting you to a world far away from here. The rest of the tell can be told by R-Zone themselves:

“Have you ever stood in a traffic jam in the middle of nowhere with complete strangers desperately looking for a party that may or may not exist? Have you ever wandered around a bombed out illegal warehouse rave at X in the morning on an E come-down? Have you ever stood in limbo between the click of a strobe or between the shards of a dense orange haze that emanates from a fog machine? Floating away on never ending waves of music and substance induced - we may as well call it - LOVE? Where for one brief moment it didn't matter who you are and what you do and how you look or how many scene-points you have? If so then you will remember the R-Zone as a shadowy place that never fully exists yet is always waiting. “

“In the whip of a snare, the beat of a kick, the wail of a string or the rush of an arpeggio, in those heart pounding moments of anticipation and in the glorious release of a drop. You know it can make the world seem an empty place, a barren wasteland devoid of endorphins, where neurotransmitters merely twinkle but never shine. Just remember you are not alone. The Petrichor project is the latest incarnation of Simon Stokes and on this EP he returns to a hardware-driven sound creating tactile, organic atmosphere within this immaculately produced output. The name Petrichor refers to the smell of rain after a period of dryness and this unique, specific occurrence offers evocative memory and imagery to anyone who thinks on the meaning. The name is therefore important as many of the ideas conjured up through this impression are relevant to the musical style demonstrated on the EP. A sense of nostalgia, an ethereal and reflective quality and a connection with elemental atmosphere are themes that permeate the music, along with a strong rhythmic core, offering an innovative and expressive new sound. 

Title track On Tides opens the EP and is introduced with notes circling around a central melodic motif. Developed carefully, this part of the track dominates as it builds. The subtle evolution of synth and percussion elements bolsters the track as it rises higher and higher, honing in on a drop. However, the track recedes before the point it traditionally may go over the edge, and begins to build again. The tides of the title are mirrored in the instrumental cycle and the dynamic ebb and flow. Each of the parts introduced is dealt with delicately and expertly.

Nukumori is the next track on the EP and it starts with more prominent percussion. Atmospheric synths come in to fill up the soundscape and the track slowly broadens out into an engrossing sound. The field recordings and vocal samples afford this track a unique, original quality where the dynamics are once more well controlled. The end result is an invigorating and intriguing track that connects emotionally as well as sonically. 

Royston Rain completes this diverse range of tracks offering more unique and highly engaging content. Full and interesting field recordings provide an enchanting entry into the track. The flowing, aqueous noises infer a sense of narrative, as images of floating under rainforest canopies are brought to mind. The melody lines and synth are perfectly sparse and beats are brought in to add impetus at the right moments. This is a stimulating track and well poised, even incorporating some electronic sounds towards the end to frame everything and draw the sounds on into another style and another track. 

This EP and new Petrichor direction are exciting prospects for the young Glaswegian and marks a definite maturity in production technique . A range of quality music is packed into these three tracks making this an EP not to be missed for its scope and unique style.
