Manavyala in our Mind, one of our early Carnatic adaptations, became synonymous with our sonic character and theme. Our live version on YouTube that we had played three years ago at my sister's wedding was the first time we had ever performed it. Amit Sahni ki List - Violin Recital

The band’s first ever composition, ‘A Clown’s Junket’ represents Karthick Iyer’s first few steps as he transitioned from a being a freelance violinist to the front-man of his solo outfit. It is set in Raga Sankarabharanam (the Western major scale), one of the most fundamental scales from which many ragas have evolved. It represents the beginning of the musician’s journey, as he balances his feet, while ensuring the audience stays entertained. The chorus signifies joy that comes from reaching small goals the band set for themselves.

A Clown's Junket - IndoSoul by Karthick Iyer Live

Mid-Air started off as a random tune in raga Harikambodhi in my head while on a flight from Auckland to Queenstown during my honeymoon. I recorded this tune onto my iphone and sent to the band. When we met a month later in Chennai, the song started to take shape. The song features an interesting interchange between the guitar and violin supported by a powerful groove reminiscent of a 60s or 70s classic rock song with a carnatic twist!

Composed by Patnam Subramania Iyer, Raghuvamsa Sudha is one of the happiest carnatic songs. This is a classic violin piece in Raga Kadhanakudhukalam, and serves as a conclusion in carnatic concerts. This high energy piece is as much fun to perform for the musicians in the band, as it is for the listeners in the audience.

Release the Burden is IndoSoul's interpretation of the famous Indian classical krithi Brovabarama composed by Saint Thyagaraja. Set in the raga Bahudari, this piece brings a feeling of introspection leading to a sense of calm. Marubari, composed by Dharmapuri Subbaraya Iyer, is a type of South Indian classical composition called Javali. Javalis are love poems written in simple and colloquial language. The IndoSoul version of Marubari features a brisk version of this classic with an RnB groove. The latter part of the song features female vocals, giving voice to passion, pursuit and desire.

Kuyilai Polave (Single) - Two Sides of Karma

"I am the size of what I see, not that of my stature." 

These words, taken from 'The book of disquiet' by Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa (translated by Richard Zenith) define the song Saramati. 
Based on the beautiful yet moody raga Saramati, these words intertwine with the breezy Carnatic classic, Sengathir Vaanam. Renowned saint-poet Sri Pithukuli Murugadas, who has written this song, talks about the joys of living an unpretentious life and finding God in nature. 

Saramati resonates this message of simple living along with the wise words of Pessoa.

A Contemporary violin adaptation of Brovabarama(Thyagaraja krithi)

I have played different styles of music from traditional carnatic to film-pop. However something that I've always leaned towards is to explore the idea of propping up our beautiful classical music against various genres like pop, rock, jazz etc. So here is a song from my outfit Karthick Iyer Live. We have played Thyagaraja's krithi Brovabarama in the raga Bahudari

Prelude in Bilahari is IndoSoul's take on the Indian classical song Paridana Meechite, originally composed by Patnam Subramaniya Iyer in the 19th century. This violin and piano duet performed by Karthick Iyer and Dondieu Divin brings together the rich tradition of Indian and Western classical music with the violin melody in Raga Bilahari interwoven with Bach inspired lines on the piano.
