DJ Trend alongside DJ Target (RIP) released the original '2 Degrees' way back in 1997 on Nicky's Kartoons label and was heavily supported by literally everyone in the scene and beyond. An anthem of its time which was remixed by DJ Brockie, DJ Trend and Geeneus from PAYG fame. Toby Ross is certainly hot property right now and with a style perfectly suited to Nicky Blackmarket’s Kartoons, it was only a matter of time before we nabbed him for a 4 track EP.

Intro vibes a run with the title track ‘Musical Warfare’. With it’s moody opening and chopped up classic breaks, it sets the tone of the release perfectly and delivers something authentic and upfront at the same time. A perfect clash of roots and culture. ‘Right Now’ harks back to the glory days of jungle with its reggae inspired hooks and one shot vocal stabs however, Toby flexes his own 2021 vision in the mix with distorted bass and sublow drones to create the ultimate flaming cocktail.

‘All Sounds’ sends an audio salute to Rodigan from the off. Blending Amen beats, claxons and Ross’ signature short and choppy production can only mean one thing here - sonic devastation. Hold tight all sound system crew on this one! 

Linking up with TEE for the final chapter as ‘Rudeboy’ signs off the EP with perfect form. One for the back of the room head nodders and everyone else who just wants to stick their head down, block out the lazers and immerse themselves in beats and bass.

Max Baker is no doubt one of the key artists flying the flag for good quality drum and bass right now and with a bunch of well supported releases still in many DJs virtual record boxes, his time with Nicky Blackmarket’s Kartoons is now. The ‘Back to Basics’ EP features a heavy dose of real music, obviously influenced by Max’s classically trained brain and memories of losing the plot at many grotty events up and down the country. Vibes from ‘94, production from ‘21.

Take ‘Slithery Snake’ for example with its luscious pads and intertwining beats which in turn, morph into trademark rough and tumbles which fans of Baker’s will doubt lap up. 10AD brings his unique jump up formula to Nicky Blackmarket’s Kartoons, supplying all kinds of heat to the end of the year. It’s a full on ride from start to finish with every single tune standing heads and shoulders above the competition. If you bag one EP to drop on New Years Eve, make sure it’s this one.

‘Got None’ samples everyone’s favourite ‘shot 9 times’ rapper to full effect, popping direct shots across the airwaves with its uptempo melodic bassline riff and snappy breakbeats. The same could well be said for ‘Sword Fight’ and it’s clever kung fu b movie samples and wonky midrange, it’s almost as if 10AD knew everyone was crying out for some jump up in this style! Title track ‘Glasses’ chucks in some atmospheric stabs and shakers alongside a melody so off key, you may well lose balance or at least some spatial awareness.

Wrapping up 10AD’s first Kartoons outing with ‘Run It’. A mix of reggae influenced one shots and simplistic beats and bass. A fine end to this trip into the mind of one of jump ups rising stars.

Nicky Blackmarket’s Kartoons is verging on its 40th release and with this banging EP from newcomer FreezeUK, it’s a fine way to almost step into that magic number. This one features a wicked colab with Blackmarket himself, check it out!

‘Coming Up’ kicks off the self-titled EP, bringing with it a ton of jump up vibes and a breakbeat so hard, it's going to cause a lot of RSI across the dance. ‘Disco Devil’ twists and turns through the motions with an array of pads and FX before dropping into one legendary vocal sample which in turn, flips into destruction mode - this one goes HARD! Special business with ‘Harry Palmer’ alongside Blackmarket so you already know this one is going to be extra hot! Rough and tough from the off with a sprinkle of Nicky’s charm under the hood.

‘Love Me, Touch Me, Feel Me’ sounds like an interesting title but wait till you hear what FreezeUK has been up to with the sampler.. Big old school vibes! Add that with a devastating drop and you have a perfect battle weapon. Hyn and Viridity link up for the final track bringing a totally different feel to proceedings. Flexed out breaks, silky vox and hammering low end mix things up to another level. Heavyweight.

Long term friend of the label Benny V links up with DJ Uniques, Supersuit and Aboudy for the ‘Kung Fu’ EP. Now that’s not to say Benny has taken up practicing roundhouse kicks and creating fire from his hands, that would just be silly, especially as the heat would have melted the mixing desk by now! What we do have here though is a bundle of upfront jump up with a splash of 90’s flavour, well in for Nicky Blackmarket’s Kartoons label.

Title track ‘Kung Fu’ features vocals from Aboudy which slot in perfectly with Benny V and DJ Uniques fun loving basslines and snappy breakbeats. It’s one of those tracks that will keep you entertained on and off the dance floor and the sneaky FX used will no doubt keep arcade addicts happy. DJ Profile adds a special remix for the EP, lacing his own style and pattern all over it with a totally different lead melody whilst retaining feels of the original.

What makes a ‘Tru Londoner’ in 2022? Well who better to ask than Benny V? This man lives and breathes the capital of the UK and at times, he’s even been known to wear one of those ‘I heart LND’ fitted t-shirts. Singalong low end eases the gap between rolling breaks, it’s even got a special switch to another octave - early 2000’s business!

Wrapping up cod and chips in old newspapers has never been more suitable when mentioning ‘Fake News’ so of course we end the EP with this one. More Benny V and DJ Uniques trademark bass riffs and some vocal stabs from Aboudy make this a great “and finally” moment.

Nicky Blackmarket is sending for every record label going in 2017 with a release schedule as jam packed as his DJ bookings. Teaming up with Voltage for release 4, this double A side banger features the dubplate smasher ‘Ice Cream’ alongside merky ‘Audio Illusion’.

Stepping up first is ‘Ice Cream’ which provided a simple yet infectious hook that mimics that of a classic ice cream van touting for business. The bright and shiny intro lends itself so well to those who appreciate DJ friendly production, it’s certainly one of those tunes that glides straight into the drop with no messing about or time for chocolate sauce. This one’s a totally smoothed out jump up roller that provides nothing short of a double 99 plus 200 flakes of bass! 

‘Audio Illusion’ adds a certain element of surprise to this release, you can either look at this as a magical trip through the eyes of the producers or be lulled into a false sense of security as the gleaming introduction bears no resemblance as what’s to come next. Muddy, thick bass and skippy drum patterns do the exact opposite of each other yet combine perfectly. A dancefloor smasher that’s guaranteed a reload.

The Journey

Aries & Nicky Blackmarket - The Journey

Slamming right back into action with release 12, Nicky Blackmarket’s Kartoons label is once again ready to do serious damage to the dancefloor. This time recruiting Northampton’s Furniss for a double A side of relentless jump up rollers.

Reminiscent of that classic jazz and funk vibe, the lead tune ‘Something Like This’ has already proven it’s worth on dubplate and with it’s tough, militant arrangement and squared off basslines, it’s certainly going to cause a commotion wherever it’s dropped.

‘War’ kicks off as to be expected and with it’s harsh exterior comes a bulletproof stepper that is as rough as they come. Drone bass shoots straight for the chest and instantly brings low end devastation. Rough, tough and dangerous!

It’s no wonder Furniss has been recruited to join the Kartoons camp and with a string of releases already lined up for 2018, this talented producer is welcome back anytime.

Don’t be fooled, Kartoons 11 is coming, it’s just taking a while in the pressing plant!

Something Like This / War

The beats are banging and banging hard at Kartoons HQ and release 15 certainly demonstrates the diversity of the label as Nicky invites King Yoof and crew to the party.

‘Mi No Ramp’ is the ultimate love letter to Benny Page and fans of this upbeat, vibe soaked jump up style will no doubt appreciate this tune no end. Featuring the vocal talents of Natty Campbell and his notorious dog bark alongside a ton of low end rolling bassline that supporters of the Kartoons label have come to expect.

Indirect shots a run in the form of ‘Lock Dem Off’ featuring Afgan Al. A grubby, dirty faced riddim that you would only dare to pull out in the grottiest of underground basement clubs. The notorious humming sublow bass sticks to the floor, refuses to move then grabs copious amounts of Nike Air Max and sucks them in.

You think this is nasty? Just wait to see what else Nicky has in store for 2019. We don’t stop here!

Mi No Ramp

King Yoof Feat. Natty Campbell - Mi No Ramp

Rowney joins the Kartoons collective with this powerful double A sided release aimed directly at blowing your headtop clean off. Blackmarket wasn’t kidding when he said 2019 was going to be the year of his digital label!

‘My Time’ is certainly what you would expect from Rowney - straight talking, no nonsense (or fog horns) jump up drum and bass. A smoothed out sublow bass directs nothing short of tactical hits to your ear and is carried across the dance floor by a glorious 2 step breakbeat structure. Simplicity at its finest.

Red alert time in the form of ‘S.O.S’. A track certainly influenced by the Full Cycle sound of 2003 and one that's already being heavily supported in plenty of virtual record boxes. Dubbed out bass associated with heavy reggae sound system speaker boxes is in abundance here, if you know... then you know. Rewind and come again.

My Time

Nicky Blackmarket is back behind the dials for Kartoons release 17 with his huge ‘Spirit’ EP. A blockbuster affair of 5 wicked vibe soaked tracks that certainly mimic Nicky’s personality, both on and off the decks. This release will leave you wondering why he doesn’t release more - not that his wife will probably agree!

The title track slides into play with a hint of congo drums, wavy pads and bright female vocals that rolls smoothly into grungy bass that licks the tops straight off the breaks. Hard kick drum rolls lead the way here alongside squelchy bass notes ripped straight out of 2010. 

‘Future’ brings forth some hefty work boots and it's instantly recognisable robotic bass patch will certainly raise a smile from some of the older or well educated drum and bass heads. A noticeable change in vibe with ‘Hustlers’. A tune certainly influenced by Nicky’s jungle roots of the past and his ability to brighten up any dance floor with good vibes.

Time for a brief rest as the intro to ‘Raise Them Up’ introduces pipes and pads although don’t be fooled, this ones a serious hard stepping affair soaked in a bucket of reverb. Bass so low it will probably shake the artex off your Grandma’s ceiling!

End credits in the form of ‘Watch Out’. Any ceiling left? If so, it’s not going to last any longer if someone drops this banger. Indirect shots a run and with bass so heavy this is certainly one to drop in a soundclash.

A welcome return to the controls, Nicky delivers a straight A grade EP for his Kartoons label. The standard has been set.

Kartoons has always been a label to support talent, no matter how long the producer has been in the game and this can certainly be said for the ‘Headpiece’ EP by DJ Gaw. A true unrestricted artist that certainly ticks all of Nicky Blackmarket’s boxes when it comes to his labels criteria. Vibes from the past, vibes for the future.

Gaw brings along Bruk for some back to back production duties on ‘Badman Selecta’ where a bunch of dreamy pads are chucked in momentarily before all kinds of wonky, off key business kicks off. ‘Fadeaway’ takes a ton of feelings from the label's heritage with breakbeats and sub rolls straight out of ‘96. What you have here is nothing short of a love letter to Hysteria and One Nation.

EP title track ‘Headpiece’ keeps that similar vibe running, taking inspiration from even further back. It’s got a nice pre jump up jungle vibe going on so if you experienced Jungle Mania in ‘94, just close your eyes and flick the switch.

‘Here We Go’ locks off the EP, bringing the mood up to date and adding in an element of darkside danger. It’s a ruthless chunk of music that guarantees to switch up the dance in seconds.

If this EP is anything to go by, expect much more from Gaw in 2020.

We could all do with a superhero once in a while, right? Thankfully the one provided by Kartoons doesn’t exactly fly across skyscrapers, rescuing people from the clutches of evil however, if you really wanted Nicky to, he would no doubt don a cape and skintight suit the next time he graces the decks!

The original ‘Superhero’ by The House Crew was released way back in 1994 and what a time to be alive that was. Jungle music was literally exploding all over the UK, we had a great choice of events to attend and nobody really knew exactly what they were doing - perfect. Times have changed no doubt but the spirit of jungle music lives on, especially with the likes of Monk, Papa G, Profile, Sub Killaz and Alcemist who have all provided their unique take on the original classic.

Monk & Papa G’s 2020 relick will make you smile from ear to ear. Their huge attention to detail gives them ultimate bragging rights in respect of remixing a classic, bringing it up to date yet retaining everything that was brilliant about the original. The Monk ‘95 Unreleased VIP’ is certainly something special and it’s been a long time coming for some die hard junglists. No beard stroking required here.

Profile and Sub Killaz of course provide a 2020 jump up relick with plenty of oomph and a frenzy of midrange bass. Alcemist reloads the clock, slipping into 2019 territory, speeding up the BPM and sticking it all in a big mixing pot.

The lyrics “You can be my knight. Who's watching over me” are certainly timeless. What a way to end the year for Kartoons.
