dublab: The Sounds of Now_part5

Mattia Prete has been at the heart of Techno Jazz a new musical movement where the freeform improvisation and instrumentation of jazz meets the futuristic and hypnotic mechanics of techno. Prete has been working in this niche as a DJ, live performer and producer, but also as manager of Jazz-o-Tech, the innovative and well-known label based in Berlin and Milan that is home to many upcoming visionary talents.

Prete now lays out his unique vision of Techno Jazz on a first EP under his own name for Jazz-o-Tech itself. Three of the forward-thinking tracks are collaborations with musicians Prete admires and respects, and one is a remix from Reeko the Spanish techno producer.

After releasing Silent Rain EP as part of Beat Movement duo, Prete now fully steps out with a bold representation of his take on the fascinating techno-jazz sound. It is cinematic and expansive, heady yet physical, and builds bridges between the famous Berlin sound and the exciting new developments happening in his native Italian scene.

'Moon, Please Don't Go Away' with composer and multi-instrumentalist Alberto Fiori pairs heavy, spacious bass hits with a rousing lead synth. It is epic, suggestive, and a real call to arms before the pummeling kick drums charge into cosmic battle. 'The Bright Side' with the great French trans-jazz band Bada-Bada slowly but surely gets you in a trance. The drums are powerful and liner, but the jazz sax up top is loose and liquid. It unfolds with increasing tension before the energy dissipates and you're left adrift in space next and the sax returns as a more friendly presence. Mattia then links with jazz pianist Uri Gincel and producer and guitar player Daniel Calvi for 'Burning Man,' which was previously a part of the This is Techno Jazz Vol. 1 compilation and is a deep, dark and brooding track full of eerie suspense.

Daniel Calvi is also the collaborator on 'Stein'. It is a track dense with ideas - the train-track drums, the tortured keys, the waves of synth, then a stunning acoustic guitar solo that brings beauty and hope. Last of all, dark industrial techno maestro Reeko remixes 'Stein' into a thumping and cavernous groove with twisted synths that drag you into a dystopian future.

This is a landmark EP from an artist who is helping to take techno into innovative new realms.

R.I.O. welcomes Pieter Kock aka DJ Peacock, one of the guiding souls behind the Berlin based bar/micro club O Tannenbaum. Musically active since 1986 as singer, guitarist, drummer and noisemaker, Peter already released a string of albums under different aliases like Billie and Ballie, The Hitmachine and Taladu.  Since the early 1990s he narrates haunting sonic stories as a DJ, playing a vast palette of styles - from cosmic and leftfield techno to tape experiments, sound-art, wave, world, jazz, punk, industrial, and all that weird pop music. Last year saw him liberating his first solo recordings under his civil name as a cassette tape named “Flocks & Murders of Entitled Spirits”, dropped by the Berlin/Vilnius based label Musikii. It unreels twelve sensitive tunes, made with the help of online synths and drum computers, Youtube travel- and talk show-videos or samples from Youtube synths- and rhythm box-demonstration videos. Now he refined his idiosyncratic style of music crafting a bit deeper and shares “Facial Recognition” – a gently twisted album that unites hypnagogic pop, library dances, cosmic funk, leftfield grooves and experimental sonic zones under one roof. His seven found sound tunes are layering a rhizomatic veil of unidentifiable web sounds, all transmuted into hazy looped ambiances, that trigger unconscious brain activities with future samples from the past, woven rhythm structures and a simultaneity of moments, derived from myriad world wide web informations. When it’s true, that nothing can have value without being an object of utility, then Pieter Kock managed to give the internet a new rate while using its manyfold informations as a tool to create art. Art, whose originality isn’t defined by the creator’s playful virtuosity. Instead, his sensibility of deciphering unheard rhythms, harmonies, and melodies in an avalanche of prefabricated ideas is his mastery. Pieter Kock transformed them into unfamiliar compositions with a familiar touch, that can evoke the feeling of being synchronous in a world of the many. A data rain without drops, a stream of consciousness without cognizance. Come in, drop out.

nICo - "Unexplored Earths" EP - OUT NOW!

Milan-based electronic music producer nICo unveils his debut solo EP, "Unexplored Earths" on label Estuary Tapes. 
These four meticulously crafted tracks arrive in Spring 2024 and come with original artwork by the Estuary Tapes label boss.
Five years of experimentation, expanding methods of composition led nICo to create a piece of work where electronica, downtempo, ritual rhythms, and dub aesthetics converge in a dance of sonic exploration.
This EP invites listeners to pay attention to its textures: the hypnotic grooves and pulsating rhythms of "The Red Sun", the evocative atmospheres of "The Old City", the dub-infused beats of “Saturation Dub”, where layers of sound create depth and intensity, and finally the introspective acid arpeggios of “Visions”.

A few key pieces of gear were key to shaping the sound of the EP: the Nord Drum 3 is at the base of all the tracks, while the Roland JU06 and Behringer Crave synths combined with reverbs and echoes bring an immersive feel, adding further colour and emotions.

"When I create music, I try to experiment with a way of composing that lets musical ideas develop freely, guided by improvisation.
The material, the melodic and rhythmic elements, then find their final pattern in computer editing.
But, we need to keep and feel a certain fluidity from the playing itself.
With BORA BORA, I continue my work with keyboards, principally, and other instruments like flutes.
But keys are the core of the music.
Since the previous album (Aubusson), a new one was invited in the intrumentarium: the Arturia Polybrute synthesizer.
Its colorful sound palette is very inspiring and gives a kind of mood of this new album, BORA BORA. Each track is like a painting, a draw or a short film. The titles are always important because they can open the imaginary and may be combined with the sounds in a sort of mental soundscape.
This album is a journey through different feelings and sound images. But there is a common color, I guess, like a dark indigo haze, a slightly melancholic dusk. This is notable in the track Le Tunnel de Klaus (a tribute to Klaus Shulze), for example.
Music is a journey.
An experimentation of our own internal perceptions. I hope this album brings the listener in a joyful listening experience."

Armenian-American vocalist, songwriter, videographer and composer/producer KÁRYYN is a qauntum spiritual time traveler.

Following a prolific period of inward healing and creating, she readies her Calm KAOSS! EP, a work created in partnership with British record producer James Ford. The project sees KÁRYYN commune with her past, present and future selves, traveling through time to reveal transformative premonitions from the future in scientific and spiritual language.

Her debut release The QUANTA Series saw her unpack and explode her past to dizzying effect. The press dubbed her “a sonic architect” (Dazed); “an electronic adventurer” (FACT) who “makes music as a way of travel, moving through memories with sound” (CLOT Magazine). In the album’s Pitchfork review,Sasha Geffen wrote: “Death hangs heavy over the record, but in its shadow, KÁRYYN projects herself into the future.” 

With the upcoming Calm KAOSS! EP, she offers three tracks: the first offering- a plea to recognizing personal strength, wholeness, resolve, and singular consciousness through the lens of Sumerian Myth and Vedic philosophy (‘the REAL’).
