Percebes starts 2021 by releasing the label honcho’s brand new “Gestures Of Release” LP. It’s an offering of tracks that reflect the producer’s unique take on languages he knows well, whilst retaining a unique sense of coherence. 

Guests include portuguese electro-funk band Thunder & Co, local junglist producer AL:X, fellow Percebes founder Hélder Russo and Chicago House new school gold medalist Andrew “Change Request” Emil. The quality of production and engineering is second to none on an LP that sounds as close to a maxi single as physically possible! There's much that a DJ can use on both dance floors and cooler settings alike, but also, an album that a music lover can enjoy on a proper turntable. Quoting Vito Corleone, it’s “an offer you can’t refuse”.

There’s deep, crunchy disco house (“Miles Away”), dreamy downtempo (“Suave”) and mellow freestyle funk (“Membrana”). Of course there are also plenty of irresistible bumping dance floor moments of classic inspiration (“Gestures Of Release”, “Clone Forge” and the bass heavy “Time Apart”).

Kaspar is one of our favorite DJs and after camping on search terms in anticipation of catching his latest mix wherever it might pop up we're thrilled to present a cover mix for 5 Mag Issue 195.

This mix was dreamt up first but ultimately came last — our interview in this same issue was so interesting to put together that the mix almost became an afterthought. But it came out better than we could have imagined — leaping from genre to genre, with a common thread of swing & groove.

Kaspar was a resident DJ at Lisbon's legendary Frágil — "the closest thing you could get to the perfect night club," he says — from 1999 until it closed in 2012, from ages 16 to 29. "It was a really lucky break, I was a kid. I mixed like Jeff Mills and scratched like Roc Raida but had the maturity of a green banana. In hindsight I was lucky both for that opportunity and also that I hadn't crashed and burnt by the time I was 30. I'm glad that I am, at least, wise enough now to recognize that."

"I've always felt the best DJs are those out of the hype loops," he says. "I was never a part of the beautiful people in that sense and thank fuck for that as most of these people's music is bland and tastes like you're eating cardboard." Here is a DJ mix that doesn't.

Ka§par: The Cover Mix

With over 10,000 records to his name, DJ Nobu is deeply immersed in a wealth of sounds ranging from uncomplicated club anthems to those more experimental in nature. His Future Terror parties, hypnotising sets and lean catalogue have largely cultivated a reputation for menacing techno, though lucky for his fans he’s just as adept when it comes to upbeat house. For this, his second Bassiani Podcast outing, the latter takes the stage with the Japanese polymath delivering a three hour set of light and playful beats recorded live at Horoom in early April. Mixing everything from cheesy disco to tropical synths, this is a breath of fresh air from the sought-after cult figure from Chiba.

About him :
A music producer and DJ since his teens, Ka§par is as much an artist as he is an experienced technician. His work masters the various languages found within the shared universe between urban and electronic music. As an author, he signed several albums of originals, dozens of records and hundreds of tracks of different genres and types - although he is often associated with the “house / techno” sound and the Detroit school, his music is permeated with London influences of broken beats and breaks, bass music, jazz and dub.
He is also a professor of music production, sound engineer and the founder, manager and curator of his own revered record label Percebes Música.

Ka§par is usually considered the youngest veteran in Portugal, by his peers. 

Sprung into action as a professional, full time deejay and musician at age fifteen, in 1997, since then he's recorded on dozens of releases, spawned a varied array of styles (his work in music was the source of income that afforded his studies in Clinical Psychology).

His profile increased considerably over the last few years, after his return as a Red Bull Music Academy graduate and his most notorious work was consistently released by two distinct artistic families until 2012: 4Lux and Groovement. Ka§par has since started work as sound engineer, A&R, studio manager and (of course) artist at TINK! Music, Lisbon (part of the Tomorrow Is Now, Kid! enterprise from Amsterdam), and released on respected labels like Chicago's Stripped & Chewed, Singapore based Midnight Shift or Rawax.

Ka§par's sound is peculiarly deep, incorporating his many influences in one very personal brand of introspective, physical electronic soul music. Ka§par's dj'ing is known for being eclectic and intense, and very well executed, digging deep into a huge record collection but also including some fresh promo action, creating a blend that is all his own.
