I have always enjoyed music that is in the down to mid tempo range, weather it be chill out lounge, with jazzy rhythms or thick deep chugging grooves. Naoki Kenji has got to be one of my favorite artists currently, his depth of production is immense as he pushes his stylistic diversity through each album he has released, from smooth lounge jazz to ethereal house and punchy jazz influenced drum and bass, while holding true to his former practice. I have chosen to draw a lot of inspiration from Kenji's song "Let it flow" because of it's irresistible groove in the bass line, with its syncopated piano chords and its unbelievably catchy guitar licks and riffs. In starting my own production, the drums was the first element to go in, with a kick snare and closed hi hats to create a bass rhythm. Because I love the bass line in Kenji's song I tried to directly re produce the basslines rhythm into my production so I could try to start building the groove into a similar Jazzy vibe. There's a repetitive chord phrase in every second bar which the first chord triggers on the off beat of the third beat and then again on the first beat of the next bar with consonant intervals. I am going to use this technique in my production because I like how the second chord is triggered on the first beat of every second bar, and how that root chord works with the rhythm of the bassline which is also a 2 bar loop. 
From this inspiration of techniques from Kenji I had a very basic loop that I felt comfortable to start experimenting with sound design on synth patches. At first I found myself I little stuck on how to actually get the sounds that I was looking for so I analyzed some of the presets in operator to get an idea on what each oscillator should look like to create the sound, from there it was just deliberate experimentation with the envelopes and filters. I found that this process was very helpful when I was stuck trying to fill up the arrangement with other tracks, as I found that knowing the different components and functions of operator allowed for me to use my ears to register the actions required to move forward in the production. One happy accident occurred when I was experimenting the pitch envelope on operator, I found that a long decay shaped upwards with a quick square LFO created a rising effect that I could use as a build before a drop, something that I had never used before which I felt was a very helpful tool to create flow through each part of the arrangement.
