Enter the ultraverse. The ultraverse is the dimension that you can access when you really want to. A shared universe that provides a cornucopia of delights. Shaytoon is proud to present a collection of music gathered from Iranian artists from all corners of the ultraverse. 

Aria Rostami kicks off the compilation with "Birth in the Garden Triptych", meshing cinematic undertones with a sense of urgency with beautiful and mysterious pads drenching the listener in allure. Unique and enigmatic duo Saint Abdullah provide a earth-shattering track with "Lustre Ware",  a freaky number falling somewhere between 90s east coast hip-hop and muslimgauze (except actually produced by middle easterns). Voiski takes us on a futurist technoid journey, drexciyan-esque elements and ethereal pads make you forget all your problems and then ricochet back into pure hypnosis. 

Label boss Sepehr takes the torch with "Diaspora Simulacra", a hyperreal image of his sonic mind ebbing and flowing between psychedelic drum shuffles and primal chants, perfect for a romantic evening with the void. Pupils may dilate after listening. London-via-Iran artist Kasra V takes a 90's styled approach reminscent of Prodigy with "Thousand Year Dream", expertly placing samples that play with each other in a harmonius yet jacking fashion. 

Next up, goddess Paramida serves up a dreamy and timeless slice of champagne house music with "Konbanwa (Ibiza Mix). A tune that you could equally hear as an uplifting soul churner in Panorama bar or taking a stroll through candy cotton fields right at dawn. LA based artist Maral supplies us with "Lorestan Reggae", deftly utilizing Farsi vocals and grungy drum and guitar textures to create an epic punk rock soundscape that sounds like it was recorded right before an apocalypse! 

Iran based artists Milad Ahmadi delivers an enchanting, low slung roller with a high octane edge. Temp Illusion 

Shaytoon is allied with our Afghan family who is currently violently being starved to death due to US imperialism. A portion of proceeds will go to Wellness Worldwide, a volunteer-based NGO providing healthcare & social support to vulnerable populations in Afghanistan.

Kasra V’s Hyperdelic EP, his first release on Radiant Records, showcases the producer’s attentive ear for textural and rhythmic play. His last EP from 2018, Akasa, was a collection of dreamy, break-driven pieces, and a more ambient collaboration with Dopplereffekt; timbre and meticulously tuned sonics were also in focus then, but we now hear a reduction of form, and with it, a saturation of style.

“Voice note to self” kicks off the EP with a boom-bap drum loop. The rhythm continues as percussive elements are added and removed, adhering to the groove and its growing complexity. A warm bassline chugs along, pitched vocals mumble into the static, and an ascendant pad begins to give the track a gorgeous depth: a horizon. Following is a remix of the same track by Byron B. Yeates and Roza Terenzi, adapting certain samples from Kasra V’s production and looping them up to a brisk 142 BPM. As can be expected from these two, the kick’s punchy 4/4 structure is buttressed by crisp percussion and clever, unexpected rhythms.

On the B-side, “Vesper” takes us back to downtempo. Bumping on at around 80 BPM, Kasra V builds upon a drum-machine loop with processed percussion samples: a snare-roll one could hear in a jungle track, chopped claps panning across the break, and so on. And the slow, warm gurgle of an 808 comes in just at the point of fracture, holding it all together. “Night Prime” extends the EP’s principle of a drum loop serving as the skeleton – with greater drama, somehow. Like in “Voice note to self”, we hear vocal samples, but here  they swerve in and out of clarity; we break into unexpected moments of silence, and the loop restarts; 3 minutes in, a huge, minor piano chord breaks upon the track like dusk. “Warm up great” closes the EP with the blend of left-field groove and dissonance one might associate with Future Sound of London or early work of The Chemical Brothers. The textures and tunings of each sample are so dense, so delicious, Kasra V lets us savour them for the last 20 seconds of the EP, lost in the reverb of a singly struck piano key.

Kasra applies cut up techniques with sampling and utilizing his own voice as a tool throughout the record, topping the club energy with a punk rock sensibility.

Equal parts eccentric and equal parts calculated, the tempest of this record is doused in wild elements: anthemic vocal samples with arena shaking capabilities, 80's hedonistic nostalgia, catchy utopian vibrations with a psychedelic cyber flair, flirting with inspiration from groups like Meat Beat Manifesto and YMO. Euphoric and aerated, but with a slicing undertone utilizing his freaky sampling prowess.

Shaytoon is proud to present the next chapter of diaspora alchemy for your listening pleasure.

With a heap of solid releases out in the last while from labels like Byron Yeates' Radiant Love imprint and Sepehr's Shaytoon Records - Kasra V's production styles reaching the realms of breaks and techy club numbers have been forward thinking and truly head turning. As a DJ he has earned the respect of some of the biggest names in the industry, played in some of the biggest clubs in Europe like Panorama Bar and Fabric as well as recently marked his 10 year residency on NTS radio. With a new label "V-SION" and its first release focusing on his tenure at the long running radio institution in London things are only moving further in the upwards trajectory for the artist.

Phonica Mix Series 121: Kasra V

VSION 02 is the soundtrack to when the club's heartbeat matches yours; the first sip of water while cavernous drums engulf you. Kasra V’s latest offering appeals to the glory days of the tribal side of 90s electronic music: sacred rhythms that echo influences from NYC clubs of past times and the freaky side of abstract dance music, while still retaining a unique flavor from his creative V-sion.

Drawing a direct line from the shadowy corners of late 90s club culture to the avant garde, Kasra’s world building is on full display, calling to mind both the full-bodied spirit of Victor Calderone’s primal grooves and the voodoo beats of Exquisite Corpse.

His most dancefloor oriented work to date, Kasra infused the energy of spontaneous jams into refined and layered sonic alchemy, utilizing vintage gear and pedals to evoke spiritually timeless flavors.

The record is artistically represented by a Pierrot-esque visual, a perfect symbol for the playful psychedelia that is still entrenched in a hedonistic flair.

The tracks bring to mind the unbridled maverick spirit of early Techno and Tribal House where the rulebook was tossed into flames and only the unfettered psyche remained.

Keeping the spirit of experimentation alive, Kasra’s affinity for manipulating samples and sounds in obscure ways shines through with playful nods to both industrial and early Midwest dance music alike.

Unchaining the shackles of where dance music has gone wrong, Kasra is trying to maintain the connection to a time when bodies moved to the beat religiously and held reverence only for the speaker stack.
