Mere Sapno Ki Rani X The Box

This sample gives me nostalgia from the early days of discovering Soulction. I remember hearing this sampled by all my favorite producers, I have probably 50 versions of this song. 

I heard it wile I was out the other night (shoutout thecandyrain) and heard Dola Re in my head - I came home and made this - I wanted it to be something hard hitting for the club, so I wrote some afro-house drums, along with a baile funk vocals and bounce. Just for good measure I followed up the second drop with a jersey club baseline - which I made just a few hours before debuting it live at the No Nazar 2 year anniversary party!

Club set from Sideway, the best club in Canberra. It was an afro/amapiano night. We start with some fringey, boundary-pushing amapiano, and take it all across the continent. We went for it, and the crowd came with us. Gig hosted by KG and Parice.

Put together some African / south asian tracks when we were promoting our Afrodesi club night.

1. Oluwa Chaiyya (KR Afrodesi Edit)
Combining Burna Boy's 'Gbona' (2019) with 'Chaiyya Chaiyya', from classic film Dil Se (1998) - produced by A.R. Rahman, based on Sufi folk and Urdu poetry, and sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi.

2. If I Tell You Enna Sona (KR Afrodesi Edit)
Davido's 'If' (2016), produced by Tekno, shattered what was left of the barriers between Afropop and the mainstream. Here it's combined with Arijit Singh's Enna Sona ('How Beautiful') from the film OK Jaanu (2017)

3. Meeting Tayari (KR Afrodesi Edit)
East Africa's longstanding musical King, Diamond Platinumz, pairs up with Mohombi and Serge Ibaka on Tayari, combined with 'Tumse Milke Dil Ka', performed by the great Sonu Nigam with Anu Malik and Altaf Sabri. It's from the 2004 film Main Hoon Na. Throw in some Skiibii and Reekedo Banks, with 2017's 'Sensima'.

KR Afrodesi Edits Pack 1

Produced with Esha for a dance performance at Canberra Theatre on the occasion of Lunar New Year: Beneath the Tiger Moon.

Esha and I wanted to make a performance that could begin to describe and explore the deep spiritual connection that dance brings into physical space. Intersections between Esha, the various ways she is positioned, by others and by herself; as a woman, as Bengali, and through a deep relationship to dancehall. Dance has always been a vessel and a vehicle of culture, and connection to what existed before - to the eternal. Cultures inherited in traceable and untraceable ways, crystallised in a moment of movement that seems as though it never started or ended: but was entered ans held instead, for a moment.
