".....Emerald Web’s 1979 debut album was a milestone in electronic psychedelia- rooted in the prog of the mid 70s and foreshadowing much of what would come in the early 80s.
Dragon Wings and Wizard Tales mixes analog synthesizing with the heavy use of wind instruments, augmented occasionally by the angelic vocals of Kat Epple. The sound is incredibly unique. The Lyricon wind controller makes a very early recorded appearance on this album and is one of the reasons the many sounds heard here are hard to place. The line is constantly blurred between live flutes and the electronic approximations, even occasionally mimicking bird calls. It’s these sound combinations that give the songs an otherworldly quality- like hearing indigenous music from another planet.
Although some pastoral vocal songs show up here and there, eerily dreamy instrumentals make up a little more than half the record. These are certainly among the highlights and show Emerald Web’s talent for crafting soundtrack music that would come to the fore later on. ”The Flight of the Raven” is a brief but gorgeous piece, summing up all that is good about this record in under three minutes. Fleeting melodies give way to dramatic clashing synths, fading away at just the right moment. ”The Powerstone” recalls early King Crimson, especially the vibe of “Moonchild”. It’s on this track that Emerald Web’s knack for creating natural sounding tones and soundscapes from very electronic instruments is most evident.
This record is highly recommended for fans of golden era progressive and electronic music. "

Although it was originally recorded in 1986, the music stands the test of time, with its mixture of innovative synthesizers, acoustic instruments, and magical sonic landscapes.

“Catspaw” was originally released by “The Audion Recording Company”, Larry Fast’s legendary electronic music label, which featured some of the finest electronic musicians in the world. “Catspaw” was Emerald Web’s eighth of eighteen albums to date. 

The bonus tracks on this collection, consist of previously unreleased music by Emerald Web, and was recorded in their Berkeley, California studio during that same era 1984-1986. The original master tapes were recently discovered in the Emerald Web archives.

Music by the legendary Space Music duo, Emerald Web, is creating quite a stir as six of their classic electronic music albums have been recently rereleased on record labels in Europe and USA. Emerald Web recorded, performed in Planetariums, composed soundtracks for Carl Sagan, and concert toured around the US, from 1978-1990. The band consisted of Emmy Award-winning musicians, Kat Epple and Bob Stohl, who played synthesizers, keyboards, Lyricon Wind Instrument, flutes, and other acoustic instruments on their albums, and in concert.

Medicine Flute

Composer, flutist, synthesist, EWI-ist, and digital orchestrator, Kat Epple, has released twenty-eight albums internationally, is an Emmy and Peabody Award winner, and was a member of the classic Electronic Space Music duo "Emerald Web," which was nominated for a Grammy in 1986.

Her original music compositions for television and film scores include: National Geographic, Nova, CNN, Carl Sagan, The Travel Channel, History Channel, The Guiding Light, PBS, Apple Computers, and NASA among others.

Kat Epple has performed at The United Nations, National Gallery, London's Union Chapel, Guggenheim Museums, MoMA, and for President Bill Clinton at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, She performs concerts as a solo artist, and with various ensembles, including The Devin Townsend Project, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Symphony Orchestras, White Crow, Katalyst Project,  Sonic Combine and Emerald Web.

In addition to specializing in synthesis, EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument), and digital orchestration, she has traveled the globe, collecting indigenous flutes from various cultures, and often incorporates their unique sounds in her original compositions.
