The 10th release of katharsis is the album “Matter Out Of Place” by Merdh Laleh, which will come out on April 15th. It will be the first physical release of the label, manufactured in an edition of 49 cassette tapes. Behind the Merdh Laleh moniker is the Copenhagen-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Valdemar Kragelund, who released his debut album “Water For Your Eyes” in 2019 on the danish label Petrola 80.

This second release of the artist is a collection of tracks and sketches made from vastly different perspectives and in divergent conditions, but which peculiarly made sense when put together in the context of the album. Consequently, the album seems to be a reflection on things that do not fit into a context. Themes of ostracism, the socially disadvantaged, shattered dreams and a lack of hope permeates the sonic atmospheres with deviating glimpses of serene and nostalgic
memories framed in sound.

The artist, who besides his Merdh Laleh moniker functions as one third of the experimental jazz trio Køs and as the keyboardist in the dark theatral rock band Josiah Konder, weaves together arcane synth-melodies with eerie vocals and hallowed saxophones to a veil of unsound laments. With katharsis-founder jjjacob contributing with the artwork and mastering, “Matter Out Of Place” sends the listener on a delirious journey, trying to understand the metaphysics of being the missing piece in a puzzle within a context you are not aware of.

q. pls introduce yourself/yourselves

> Hi! We are Csenge & Edit from Hungary (currently residing in Budapest/Berlin), the masterminds behind Lazy Calm Raga. LCR started as a sweet coincidence when we recognized we have an almost identical taste in music, so we started making mixes just for fun a couple of years ago (phew! already). Then eventually got into DJing too and we were invited to do a bi-weekly radio show on Lahmacun Radio since its beginning. We still kinda identify ourselves as just people who are really really enthusiastic about music. Music is a miracle in human's life <3

q. is there a story behind the mix? how did it come together?

> We wanted to make a nice mix that could accompany our friends gathering in the same living room. We have a friend circle living in three different countries so it's rare that we can make this real, especially in these times...but it's the best when it happens :) you don't want to waste that time to pick background songs one after another, you need sum good mixes! This is an attempt to be one of those.

q. in your opinion, what would be the ideal circumstances to enjoy your mix?

> We recommend munching on some erdnusslocken, sour gummies or THC gummies (or both), and maybe lighting up some incense sticks. If you have a cat around to stroke that will also work out well.

q. describe a favourite object in your living room…

> Cs: ugh, tuff question, I'm a gadget maniac :D I have a naive dolphin drawing framed, it says "good job! or you worked well today!". I found it on the street in a primary school child's notebook, I think the teacher drew it and glued it there as a motivational sticker.

>E: obviously Mitzi, my cat (check @mitzitempo on instagram to see why!). Besides, it must be the dolphin-shaped beer opener together with the crocodile-shaped nutcracker, and the minerals from the German Harz mountains.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?

>Cs: For me it's a quiet time, I don't draw much these days after work, but I'm trying to get back to reading, buying way too many books..I just got asked to be part of a future art book though, which is very promising and I'm excited to make new art.

>E: Books, fermentation, not to get more depressed and looking at cake arts on IG. If talking about the longer term, I am planning to go back to study in the fall and I can't wait for a real LCR set again! Maybe we can occupy another bridge soon and throw a party there?

"The influence and presence of trap and rap in dance/experimental is obviously massive, and the lines between genres are more blurred than ever. HAJJ, however, says this is a recent thing; “I find that the electronic scene in France is just starting to encourage the integration of this culture. Not so long ago people insulted me when I played rap/trap in my sets.”

The underpinning idea for this compilation brought electronic producers not explicitly of that world to unpick whatever boundaries remain and contribute tracks for a mixtape – while a few of the artists are more obviously ready to “play the game” and already make music which exists pretty close to this horizon, this has been a challenge to think creatively for a few of the other artists invited."

A park bench at dawn,
a chessboard of frost.
The grandmaster’s gambit,
desperately lost.
His strategy—scars
on a map of the skin—
A final move made
as the shadows moved in.
A pawn removed.
