The season is changing so quickly and before the memories of summer disappear I wanted to get this little vocal memory of our holiday down…

We were standing on a hill looking out to sea at Pendean lighthouse in South Cornwall.  The white noise of the waves almost cancelling all other sounds, I was thinking of my friend Lucy Powell’s programme about silence on Radio 4 and how there is no such thing as “no” noise but this was the closest thing to it and it felt incredibly peaceful. Then as if to break the spell, my daughter Amy started tapping out a rhythm on our car bonnet.  Which formed the basis for this song.

This is the first attempt at recording on my new set up….lots to be learned in terms of mixing and levels and learning to do my own  bass and drums and stay in time….

MUSICAL BOXES

LIFE IS When I wrote this, I ran to my partner excited and said “I’ve written a song for you….and for my Dad” Which as you can imagine, was a bit confusing for him.  But it’s what songs are about – they start as one thing – the opening I wrote at the piano in my Dad’s house and was very much thinking about my childhood – and then the rest of it I wrote back home in Bristol with the sort of uplifting enthusiasm that is also a bit childlike really.  But it’s what I feel a lot.  Why do we not tell people how much they matter more often, why is it so hard to appreciate people/this life.  Let’s not wait until we’re dead. Let’s do it.  NOW.

I managed to finish the idea just before I went into the studio – which matches it’s urgency really.
