The Federal electorate of Calare sits at the heart of Australia’s energy transition. It’s home to one of NSW’s Renewable Energy Zones, a proposed site for the federal Opposition’s nuclear energy plan, and a major agricultural region navigating rising energy costs and climate impacts. Community independent candidate Kate Hook explains why Calare is a microcosm of the national energy debate — and why she believes the electorate has more to gain from the shift to renewables than almost any other. She outlines her plan for fairer access to clean energy, including government-backed loans to help households electrify and reduce energy bills, and argues for a managed transition that supports fossil fuel workers, delivers regional investment, and avoids costly delays, and distractions like nuclear.


The electorate that could power the transition, and the community independent who knows how

Kate never planned to go into politics, but knows someone has to stand up for our community and have the courage not to shy away from the tough topics. 
Kate’s a team player, a doer, a professional working mum of four and small farmer who helped set up a community solar farm. She first ran in 2022 because she was asked to step up, and was overwhelmed by the community support – coming second against the National party incumbent. 

Kate’s running again with the backing of her community, determined and excited to get it done. Kate has spent the last two years helping communities across NSW advocate for their needs with renewable energy projects, ensuring communities get a seat at the table and a large slice of the benefits.  Not one to do things by halves, she has resigned from her job with RE-alliance in order to commit herself full-time to this community campaign.


Kate’s a community champion who believes in doing things with the community, not to them. 

She’s ready to build the future we actually want: with better services, real infrastructure, smarter trade deals and quality education for all our kids. With new opportunities for our young people, and skilling and support to help our coal communities evolve and thrive. 

It’s time for a representative who has the courage of their convictions – who says what they mean, and does what they say. Who’s here for the right reasons and focused on the future. Who will put people before party, representing us, and only us. 

This election, we’re choosing a fresh start for Calare.
