A Debussy pastiche! Live recording; premier performance at Morley College, London, 26th March 2018. Programme note reads:
'Consciously influenced by the piano works of Debussy, this piece was inspired by a visit to Peak Cavern, Castleton in the Derbyshire Peak District, which boasts the largest naturally-formed entranceway in Britain. Years ago, rope makers used to live and work in the cavern as it was the only covered place in the locality with enough space for weaving the long ropes needed for sailing ships, mining and bell ringing, among other things. There were also stories of gypsies and travellers using the caves for shelter and for gatherings. The piece is in episodic form, taking us step by step into the depths of the cave system where the imagination may perceive some of these impressions from the past.'

My own version of this incredible piece for viols, written c. 1580 and the only known work by the English composer Picforth. Played here on violin with some live looping and real-time effects trickery. Find the Fretwork version for the best performance!

An experiment using the 'found sound' of a restored watermill wheel at an old cotton mill in Cheshire.
Or is it?
Well, such a waterwheel does exist and when I visited it I was totally fascinated by the sounds of the huge metal wheel turning, with the water splashing and dripping inside the enormous reverberating chamber. I intended to go back with recording equipment but circumstances conspired to prevent this! So I recreated the sounds using a frame drum, a violin, some real-time fx and live-looping.
