'Diapsid' explores the notion of hauntings in landscapes depleted by loss of diversity and engages in divination to conjure the long-evolving evolutionary strands whose continued existence is now threatened by ecological crisis and cascading extinctions. Using field recordings collected during trips to littoral zone marine caves in S.W. U.K. which are formed in rock dating from the Carboniferous or 'carbon bearing' era, 'Diapsid' is based on speculative knowledge of organisms from the time when the layers of sediments that formed these rocks were laid down. The earliest-known diapsid is Petrolacosaurus, a small creature which had a heavy ear bone, the stapes, that could not conduct airborne sound and instead, probably transmitted ground vibrations through the limb bones to the skull. Petrolacosaurus is a member of a group that would later evolve into birds. The field work activities which inform this film propose a sensing of the residues of other-than-human in these interstitial environments and a means of becoming attuned with this ambiguous world, seeking to perceive the losses and vestiges of other-than-human lineages.

Diapsid

Created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this piece was made during lockdown in the UK. My family were shielding as I was classed as highly vulnerable, and this was particularly hard on my youngest child. He began having piano lessons via Zoom, and I could hear him practising through doors and floors all around our home. This sound work is a reflection of that time, and the quiet, repetitive weekly rhythms.

A reflection on Joan Lyneham (born Plymouth 1912, disappeared Plymouth 1941), her investigations in sonic technology and research into  spatial acoustics, directional sound and principles of resonance. 
"Instinct will allow you to tap into the stream of sonic consciousness which leads straight from your eyes and fingertips into the sonic intricacies which Lyneham also saw and felt. In this way, we may collectively generate an impression and intimation of Lyneham’s investigations".

'The New Geolinguists' (an idea borrowed from Ursula Le Guin’s 1974 short story 'The Author of the Acacia Seeds') imagines that during the coronavirus pandemic, while usual lives were paused, our worldwide collective experience sparked a gift for hyper-communication. We now use all in our means to listen and hear ourselves and others – both human and non-human – engaging our senses in a remembering of the value of care.

The New Geolinguists

Storm Ellen, commissioned for Aeolus Online Project
Berry Head NNR latitude and longitude: 50.4000° N, 3.4833° W

The winds of Storm Ellen, recorded 21/08/2020. Ellen was the first UK summer storm to be named since the Met Office and Met Éireann, the Irish Met Service began their project to name storms in 2015. This audio was made at Berry Head National Nature Reserve, at the edge of its 59m-high cliffs, where Storm Ellen’s strongest gust of wind (at 108kmh/67mph) was recorded. Berry Head is an ancient Devonian limestone headland which lies on the urban fringes of Brixham in Devon. A site of rich biodiversity with precious and vulnerable habitats, it is home to the last 22 hectares of a globally rare type of limestone grassland – the only remaining fragment on the planet. At moments in the recording you can hear the wind rattling the dried, upright seed heads of Greater Knapweed (Centaurea scabiosa).
