We're All Militants Now

This song is now being sent along to the Climate Change LSC Songwriting Challenge.  I hope they like it.  It's not just about climate change specifically; it's more about how you don't notice the little pile of sand at your feet until it's grown into a massive unstoppable dune!  
Here are the lyrics:

Sand Comes Creeping

First you forgot to remember,
Then you began to be free
Of the clocks and the winding and the terrible binding
That helps us pretend who to be.

The words are all scattered around you,
Hanging like leaves on a tree.
Blindfolded, you chase them, attempting to trace them
On beaches washed smooth by the sea.

It doesn’t help if you wave now.
It doesn’t matter what hours you’re keeping.
The wind has blown, and the course is set.
Do you see how the sand comes creeping?

I never noticed you leaving till I heard the soft click of the door.
The fact that you warned me and often times scorned me
Just never prepared me for this kind of war.

Written on the 14th November 2015, exactly 75 years after the blitz on Coventry.  Sadly also now the date of ISIS attacks on Paris.  Written in hopes of peace.  The photograph shows Coventry Cathedral at the commemoration service on the evening of 14 November 2015.

See Through The Mist

This is a song of hope.  Having never suffered from depression, I found myself in a state of despair over the winter of 2016/2017.  Although I was convinced it would only be temporary, it was a pretty scary place to be.

Your Lonesome Valley

My Great Grandfather, William Henry Fear, was forced to uproot his family in the early part of the 20th century from Weston Super Mare to Coventry in search of employment.  A skilled carpenter and joiner, he couldn't make enough money in his beloved Somerset, so took the gut-wrenching decision to move to the big city.  Before you condemn the economic migrant, just have a think about how you'd feel!

On 18 February 1832, John Danks went out for a walk with Mary Green AKA Polly Button, who was heavily pregnant with his child.  In a barn just outside of town, he slit her throat, returning home to his wife and explaining that they would have no more trouble from Polly - "I stopped her hooting"! Some lyrics and the whole of the style of this song are based on the American traditional song Little Sadie, a song that has always intrigued me due to the cavalier nature of the killer: "ran right home and I went to bed", which chimed with the attitude of John Danks when arrested - he is said to have walked up the prison steps and waved his hat three or four times to the gathering crowd.

Like a Phoenix

I'm a songwriter from Nuneaton in Warwickshire, UK.  I play solo or with my group, Daisybell.  The most recent songs on here are from my 12 Songs of (a broken) Christmas - a challenge to write 12 songs over Christmas 2016.  This was designed as a creative and positive way of getting through a particularly difficult few weeks.  I hope you enjoy them.
