Michael's Waltz

This tune comes to us from a home disc recording of John Morgan Salyer, made by his son Grover sometime around December 1941 in Salyersville (Magoffin County), Kentucky. Though he never made music his profession, John Salyer did sometimes play for money. In 1933 he even traveled to Chicago with his sons Grover and Glen to play for a dance in the Million Dollar Ballroom of the Knickerbocker Hotel. Matt’s fiddle is cross-tuned like Salyer’s to AEAE, in what Salyer would call a “wildcat key.” Greg joins Matt by flat-picking the melody at the beginning and end of the arrangement.
