Songs are added throughout the month and then I do the whole thing over again with the next month's Submithub approvals that have a Soundcloud link as one of their audio sources.

I don't use Soundcloud that much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ except for sharing playlists & reposting all the Submithub submissions I've approved for blahging each month that were submitted via Soundcloud. So I guess I use it a little bit after all.

Los Angeles-via-Wichita country artist Katie Jo is gearing up to release her debut record Pawn Shop Queen (out April 9.) A relative newcomer, she makes up for it in life experience. You can hear it in her voice—sweet yet road-weary, a contemporary torchbearer for classic country stars like Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Her lyrics tell the tale of a woman who’s had her heart broken more than once but still stands strong. 

Pawn Shop Queen tackles themes at the dark heart of country music: infidelity, religion, depression. But what sets Katie Jo apart is her ability to tackle taboo subjects like infertility and abortion with honesty and rawness. The catalyst for her new record from a trying period of her life: a life-threatening pregnancy that ended in termination, intense heartbreak from a cheating lover, and a deep depression.

“It was a very traumatic, life-altering thing to go through alone," she says. "For five or six years, I just kept it to myself. It really destroyed my emotional fortitude. Writing and performing were an escape from this pit of despair. The record really encapsulates the cynicism and isolation I was feeling.”

With Pawn Shop Queen, Katie Jo shakes up traditional expectations of what a female country artist can and should sing about. It’s the sound of a promising young songwriter coming into her own, taking some of life’s most painful struggles and turning them into something beautiful.
