Lady Brains Ep 1: Hard vs. Soft Science

In this episode of the Lady Brains podcast we discuss women's role in scientific research, both as subject and researcher. We raise questions about the history of medicine and how conditions of the female body weren't (and continue to not be) explored due to the fact that the people asking the research questions are primarily men. We discuss the idea of the male body and experience as the standard for medical treatment and pain relief. The history of gynaecology and its ties to the abuse of slave women, and the continued marginalization of women, are also explored.

In this episode of the Lady Brains podcast we discuss the environment of science. How has the environment surrounding scientific study been exclusive to women and other marginalized groups and how can it be better? We analyze how stereotypes have shaped the environment of science and how they continue to perpetuate the idea that only certain types of people can be successful in certain areas of science (if at all). We also look at how the competitive nature of science drives exclusion as well.

Lady Brains Ep 4: Feminist Philosophy of Science

On this episode of Lady Brains we discuss the Curie Complex and what it means for women in science. We address how successful women are represented as "god-like", needing to be perfect, and needing to "balance it all" in order to be recognized for their work. We also look at how the typical gender roles for women are often incorporated into discussions about successful women, as opposed to men. The idea that women need to work twice as hard as men in order to be successful is also discussed.

In the final episode of the Lady Brains podcast we discuss the progress that is being and can be made toward equality in science. We address the progress that has been made to-date towards inclusion and what still needs to be done. As well, we analyze the deeply rooted societal norms that are a barrier towards equality and we propose possible ways of combating the halt that has occurred in the way of the feminist science movement.
