Estera Juricic (bottom right) did not know safety until she was 20 years old.  The inhumane madness of war ravaged her home in Racice, Slovenia before she was old enough to comprehend what was happening. 70 years after Italian soldiers took her beloved father and brother away during the occupation of Slovenia in WWII, the pain, confusion and terror lingers. But Estera has become a resilient survivor and a true testament to the strength of the human spirit.

*Music slowly and softly fades in*
On ’43, on December, Italian army come in night time and I remember very well that because they was knocking the door and we was all wake up.  
And they took the dad away. “Just come with us and you coming back soon.”
And my mum, she said “One minute I just ask next-door-neighbours for bit of bread.”
(Soldiers) “no, no, no he, he doesn’t need it he will coming back soon.”
*Door closes as father is escorted away.*
As a young kids, we didn’t know nothing because war was nearly at the end, and we thought really, mum thought he will coming back. But, next time they come in and they knock again and they come and pick up our brother, was sixteen-year-old and we didn’t see them again.
My mum was pregnant; my younger sister was born after that pass a month-and-a-half. We was very poor. No men to work. Mum with all that that kids. And mum she didn't have any pension. No support. Losing the parent, the father, when is father not in the family it’s poverty. And people they used to say to mum: "Escape, go in Italy after the war, you get good pension there".  In those years, they used to shoot on the boarder if you see people escape.
Wasn’t only me, who know how many children was like that.”
