As a teenager, I became enthraled with Batman. I poured over the comics, the lore, the media - heck, I even got a Jim Lee Batman 3/4 sleeve 😅... I LOVED Batman. 

What always struck me about Batman was the grittyness, the griminess, the grotesque atmosphere lingering and permeating throughout Gotham on any given night. How your footsteps must echo throughout the smog, dispersing into the night, into oblivion. Thier only accompanyment; shadows by streetlight. 

Film and Audio are two great passions of mine. I love a bit of musique concrete, a bit of avante garde... Sounds, you know? They're pretty neat. 

Where the two disciplines converge & diverge has always captivated. Both present information over time. Both compliment, yet stand alone from one another. The many ways in how  a sound instantly inform a feeling mirrors the way "a picture is worth a thousand words."

When Luke asked me to do this project, I ended up getting really stuck into the weeds of the project. 

I love to over-process and over-work things. Take a sound, fuck it up, reverse it, pitch shift it, gate it, compress it... you get the idea. For this track I did all of the above, plus tape was involved in several ways. 

Firstly, my handy dictaphone. I used both recordings taken on the tape, in addition to ripping the full song on to tape and back off.

That tape is so old. in the "biz" we call the grittyness, pops and clicks present on old tapes like mine "artifacting". My tape is artifacted to heck.

(Artifacting is where pieces of magnetism have slowly coroded over time - each time the time has been played. It's a sound tapeheads love ❤ The muffled distorted sound is often described as "warmth") .

I volunteer at a repair cafe, and as part of that, we have an e-waste bin where the public can donate their old e-waste for us to repair/scrap/etc. 

Anyway, I found this little radio-style mic in there. It was packaged with some Hornby controller modulars so I like to think it was used for some little train announcements in some random bloke's garage somewhere. 

After showing my Twitch chat my latest find on stream, I felt the urge to improvise a little track, and here's what I ended up with. 

One Korg Monotron Delay, one rubbishy little train microphone. (I ran a little compression on the Master bus, but that's it).
