A Soviet Official comes to conduct a search. He looks for the anti-Stalin poem. The Poem, who is personified in the musical, taunts him as his search proves fruitless.

SONG SET UP: Svetlana is a recent immigrant to the USA from the former USSR, where she had been a professional pianist. In America, she has been a "home attendant" to the elderly Mrs. Dubin. In this scene, Svetlana decides to start pursuing her "real" career-- music. The song is an extended musical sequence in which Svetlana travels from gig to gig, expanding her skills as a musician and also, her English.
