Shake and Bake

Kayla Whittaker started playing piano and acoustic guitar at a very young age. She won 1st Place in Young Authors at age 5. At the ceremony, there was a Grand Piano which she was immediately drawn to and this was where her interest for playing instruments began. She toyed with piano from that point on and purchased her first acoustic guitar at age 11 with her saved money from babysitting. Kayla was involved in Chorus throughout Elementary School, Junior High and High School as an Alto singer. In Her Senior year, she started to teach herself how to play guitar and began writing original songs based on her life experiences. Her Chorus teacher saw her strong desire to play guitar and allowed her to play at the High School Graduation Ceremony. Her first gig was there where she played Green Day's, "Good Riddance" as the school's Show Choir sang along in front of more than 1,000 people. From that point on, Kayla continued to write songs, some funny and some serious. She was invited to dorm room parties frequently while attending the University of Rhode Island where her song, "Slutbunny" was an immediate hit. For the next 12 years, she played on a daily basis and continued to write, learn and play guitar, drums, piano, violin and bass guitar. Her desire and love for music never lost it's important place in her life. In May 2016, she was invited to Open Mic at the News Café by the talented Tammy Laforest. She decided it was the right time to go out and play for someone other than her close friends. On May 18, 2016, she played her first Open Mic Night and fall in love with performing in front of people. From then on, Kayla has continued to play Open Mic there and at a number of venues in Rhode Island. "Slutbunny" and "Pee Song" have become instant fan favorites. She plans on continuing her musical journey and performing for people.
