Lonely (Theme from My Lonely Me)

From a project I did with Fitzy, Matt Childs and Geoff Skelhorn in 2007-9 called Karma Motiva. Didn't do an official release, but I sometimes miss it ;o) 

We did an EP of four tracks, all quite different. Guess I need to ask the others before putting the other tracks on, but this one I wrote and the boys produced.. We did some gigs. They continued for a while afterwards. I sometimes guested.

No Control - Karma Motiva 2009

The song is a tale of childhood memories and family resemblance, released four years to the date of when Kaya, (singer, songwriter and chief ‘lampscientist’), lost her father to a sudden heart attack at 63. With a clever double meaning of being able to see him in the mirror but also hoping that she is able to continue to see the world in the same optimistic way that he did, it is melancholic but hopeful! 

The artwork is by Kaya’s friend since college and fellow Norwegian; Tone Blomli Johnsen, who came over to stay for two months but ended up staying for two years. Dubbed as her ‘grief portrait’, it captures the perfect amount of sadness yet full of beauty and courage.
 
After picking up the idea after supporting fantastic artist Gabby Young last summer, they are now Launching their own Patreon Campaign coinciding with the single release:
 
A rising trend amongst independent artists, Patreon is an opportunity for Science of the Lamps to be able to keep on doing what they’re doing since splitting with their label before the award winning two sound tracks. Album ‘Nightmarine’ recording in process, out later this year, recorded, produced and mixed at Big Smoke Studios and mastered at Metropolis Studios. It will be one of the first releases by new label Big Smoke Records, a collective of independent, established artists of Big Smoke’s recording and production roster taking this into their own hands.

A somber yet hopeful tale about the darkest blues that grief brings

Quite appropriately ‘The Science of the Lamps’ was discovered by Kaya in an off the beaten track restaurant in the fairytale darkness of the city of Prague in December 2010, she just didn’t know what it was yet. Since then, the experiment has gradually been hypothesized and carried out in uncontrolled environments in collaboration with Liverpool & international talent such as, Grethe Borsum, Luke Moore, Mark Brockelsby, Grammy Award winner Greta Svabo Bech and many others. 

Their inspiration comes from vaudeville, visual art, early Hollywood movie scores, Nordicana, wine, flamenco, trip-hop, music boxes, Paris and whiskey bars.

In late 2012 at St George’s Hall, Science of The Lamps performed for world famous actor Stephen Graham as part of his “Coming Home” ‘In Conversation’ event by Little Atom. Their rendition of Stephen’s favourite song (Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish You Were Here) was spontaneously described as “Beautiful” by the star. 

Since their first live appearance at Liverpool Light Night in May 2011 they have gone on to appear at festivals such as; Standon Calling, Liverpool Sound City, Jessheimdagene (Norway), Above the Beaten Track and Threshold Festival, a couple of trips to London, played alongside Shona Foster and three support slots with Louis Barabbas & The Bedlam Six and pretty much all of the more theatrical and quirky acts in town. They are very happy to be on the same bill as their friends in All We Are at Sound City Liverpool 2013 in the peculiarly fabulous Kazimier Gardens

About Kaya:

Kaya has become a well-know name on the local scene and was chosen as BBC Merseyside ‘Artist of the Month’ and as ‘Spotlight Artist’ for Liverpool Acoustic. Her debut album 'Balloon in a Cactus Field' was also released on Ultimate Fake Records and is “a collection of beautifully crafted songs with a surprising bite”.

Kaya’s previous experience includes singing backing for Ringo Starr at Liverpool08 opening and for Seal and Jon Bon Jovi at the Royal Variety Show and a long track record of gigs solo or with band including playing alongside Brett Anderson (Suede), The Wombats, Cherry Ghost, Noah & the Whale, Marina & The Diamonds, Foy Vance, The Farm, Sandi Thom and pretty much the whole Liverpool scene, the new project started is a home for all the caged songs that didn’t fit Kaya’s band’s alt. rock line up; Lyrical gems with darkness and light, sultry sounds and unfinished rough gems flowing out of notebooks and on the back of beer coasters.
