CAST OFF Podcast 32: Elz

Being known for genre-bending and crowd-pleasing, Elz has mastered the art of reading the crowd by setting the mood with tasteful dance music. Growing up listening to breakbeats, techno, and house music and discovering classic rock, jazz, hip-hop, the 80s, and funk music, she learned how to incorporate all of these elements together to create some serious flavor. Her parents were opera singers, so they raised her with a great appreciation and passion for music and vinyl. She studied piano and violin throughout her youth and sang with her High school jazz band. She got interested in electronic music by going to local underground raves in San Francisco and saw her first female DJ perform and immediately became inspired to learn how to use turntables herself to express her love for music.

Her first DJ gig was in 1998 in a large warehouse space called 2nd and Jackson in Oakland. Soon after, she started playing for many legendary San Francisco long-running events, including 2nd Sunday, Sister SF, Feel Good, Sonic at 1015, Mixed Elements, and The Gathering. In March 2008, Elz graduated from Ex’pression College with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Sound Arts. After graduation, she spent the summer interning for DJ Shadow, assisted in preparation for the launch of DJ Shadow Digital (DJ Shadow Digital Store), and processed sound samples for the store. She has releases on Muzimo Records, Harlum Muziq, Look Out Records, and has just joined the Tech House label Laser Native as their newest resident artist. In 2015 she studied Ableton at Sequence One in Oakland and then went on to work as a Music Curator and Audio Engineer at the DJ app, Crossfader.

She has performed gigs at the SXM festival in St. Maartin, BPM festival in Mexico, Tulum, Coachella, WMC in Miami, in New York, Los Angeles, Vegas, Seattle, Burning Man, Day Breaker, Sunset Campout, Boiler Room, E Komo Mai Festival in Hawaii, and all over the Bay Area at clubs such as The Midway, Public Works, Halcyon, The Great Northern, Monarch, 1015 Folsom, The End Up, DNA Lounge, Ruby Skye, Temple, The Clift Hotel, and Audio. She has opened for such acts as Bob Moses, Thugfucker, Hoj, HOSH, Hot Since 82, Detroit Swindle, Huxley, Terry Frances, Giom, German Brigante, Justin Martin, Christian Martin, Demuir, Doc Martin, Colette & Heather, Fred Everything, Sonny Fodera, Session Victim, Mood II Swing, DJ Dan, DJ Sneak, Jesse Perez, Richey Ahmed, Mikey Lion, Galen, and Solar to name a few.

She was a resident with The Kazbah for many years and is currently with the Disco Knights Burning Man crew. Elz was also a resident DJ at the Virgin Hotel in San Francisco at the Everdene Rooftop bar and the Common’s Club from 2019-2020. Elz is currently a DJ instructor at Blue Bear School of Music and teaches therapeutic beat-making workshops for elementary and middle school children using Ableton and the Push with the nonprofit Today’s Future Sound throughout the Bay Area. Her mission is to use music as a tool to heal people by giving them a safe space to be themselves while injecting them with positivity via dancing to the best music.

We’re beyond happy to continue our series at Deep House Barcelona with @Lion_Heart - an incredible artist from Finland, currently living in Tulum, Mexico. We discovered LionHeart, on his real name Lasse Larkovuo, a few years back and completely felt amazed by his unique way of storytelling through music and hoped he would be part of our project ever since. LionHeart brings a deep dimension of sound with smooth grooves, lush breaks and dreamy vocals, seducing you to either dance or meditate. His spiritual nature is his core as a person - a true LionHeart indeed, spreading love, awareness and inviting you to be part of a musical dialogue, inspired by the planet's surroundings and the dance floor. Having much experience playing for crowds throughout the world at the festivals Colors of Love, Hedone and Restaura Experience, he understands how to develop a moving experience and a profound journey for the listeners. We hope you enjoy this exquisite session he masterfully recorded for us, and we invite you also to find out more about LionHeart, in his own and genuine words:

"I’ve been a passionate collector of all types of music for over 20 years and as a DJ creating journeys whether it be ambient or for the dance floor, music has always been my favorite form of meditation and release. Music is also the fuel for my creative process as a fashion designer for my sustainable, natural clothing brand VALO Design (www.valodesign.fi). Combining elements that may initially seem very different from each other into a vibrational  harmony, happens in both arts. There is a great challenge and satisfaction in creating something new and interesting from separate pieces, as much with songs as fabrics and patterns. Both are challenging fields to stand out and offer something unique! 

I always try to recreate my music offering into something new, surprising and interesting. These days I too rarely find DJ mixes or sets in clubs or festivals that offer something with an unusual twist and with a bit of surprise. So I’ve become a big fan of mixing beyond genres or tempos and try to be outside of the safe zone with how I play. This is why I also enjoy playing unconventional dancefloors, especially for the collectives I am a resident artist for, Colors of Love, Hedone and Restaura Experience. All these unique communities offer both artists and all participants the space to express without traditional boundaries and preconceptions. 

About the mix: This mix expresses some of the waves of emotions I’ve been going thru in my personal journey the past years, a bit of deep and mysterious, something hypnotic, something playful and dreamy…finishing with feelings of hope and harmony. A lot of airy grooves with breaky basslines! It was a big pleasure to put this one together :)

Bigasti was born in the eighties and developed his passion for music during his childhood and by playing the drums with his brother.
Without musical education but driven by his sheer interest in electronic music he started around producing in 2013 – an appreciated contrast to his daily routine in the office of a multinational cooperation. This was the year the project “Bigasti” was born. Since then, he spends a lot of his spare time producing.

After one year Bigasti released his first track in 2014 on the France based INLAB recordings. In 2016, he released a free track on the renowned German music community KLANGEXTASE, an EP on Electronical Reeds and an EP on Kuukou Records with his german friend and producer Moe Danger.

He takes his inspiration from nature and wild areas. His fascination of mystic nature sceneries is reflected in his dark melodies and mellow beats integrated in a unique atmospheric style.

In summer 2015 and together with his Swiss Friend Floloco he started Schirmchendrink, a quickly growing electronic underground music podcast and soon record label.
