Cascine introduces NOIA (@noianoianoia), the latest addition to our family of artists, and share the lead single from her inaugural EP (Habits), due out 10/14 via Cascine and Mexico's Buen Dia Records. 

NOIA (Gisela Fulla-Silvestre) was born and raised in Barcelona, the only daughter of her activist and intellectual parents. Her father was part of a clandestine Communist party that fought against the Franco dictatorship, often spending time in prison as a result. Her mother was a pioneer in the field of child psychology. Together they fought for democracy in Spain, instilling in Gisela a deep reverence for community along the way. In addition to revolutionary discourse, music was a constant in her home – Traditional Catalan, Rumba, Flamenco and French artists were regularly heard. Her young mind grew fixated on philosophy while her heart became obsessed with music.

Having completed a degree in film scoring & sound design at Berklee, NOIA is now based in New York where she's developed a community of other obsessives who have pushed her to be as serious with her art as she is about her career. She took their advice and doubled-down on a body of work that captures her point-of-view on pop music. When director Allie Avital eventually introduced her to Cascine last spring, a mutual connection was formed and plans were made to work towards a release together.

NOIA describes her debut EP as, “a reflection of my many idiosyncrasies – deep solitude, rigid eating schedules like a retired old man, nostalgia for an imagined future, desired memories of a better past, bread with olive oil & avocado, masturbation, etc.” The four tracks on Habits reflect NOIA’s myriad musical and cultural influences. Everything from Dancehall to Tropicalia music to leftfield R&B are present, while the literature and cultural theory of Cavafy, Olaf Stapledon and Byung Chul Han are referenced in the lyrics, which are sung in a mix of Spanish and English. NOIA also incorporates her work as a sound designer for film, creating a range of custom percussive sounds – her snares are stacks of assorted foley items, while her hi-hats are comprised of digital distortion trash. “My music is maximalist or baroque in the way I have layers upon layers of sounds at work in the material,” she explained.

Although NOIA writes from a dense creative place, her music is accessible on the surface. Both casual listeners looking for a headphone jam and serious fans demanding a deeper experience with pop music will find much to appreciate in NOIA’s productions.

'Frost Burn' is the second single taken from Half Waif's form/a EP, which launches February 24, 2017.

form/a is a collection of tracks that expand on Nandi Rose Plunkett's exploration of home. “There's an inherent restlessness in the way that I write and think about sound," she explained. "I'm the daughter of a refugee, and somewhere in me is this innate story of searching for a home. As a result, I have many – a collection of places that I latch onto, that inspire me, that fuse themselves to me. I'm sentimental, nostalgic – yet constantly seeking what’s next, excavating the sound of my past and coloring it to make the sound of my future. I'm a child of divorce, fiercely loved but forced into independence at a young age; I rocket into relationships with the desire to find roots, commonality, to create stillness in the midst of public noise. In this way, my songs are like the notes of a large scavenger hunt, clues pinned to trees I have known, or tucked under rocks on my path, urging the listener to keep looking a little deeper, because maybe they will find something special in the end.”

I'll be trying to post more. thanks for the support on all the growing up albums.

I've been working on albums, but haven't felt too motivated lately. Summer usually gets me more motivated so I'm hoping that'll boost me up.

I have albums for other accounts in the making. Specifically Alicks, and sojuda. Alicks album is about 13 tracks so far. sojuda album is around 67 tracks at 3 and half hours long, I really wanna hit 100 tracks on that before I release it.

but anyways, for people who are interested in lofi hippety hop, I'm trying to put together some kind of album, but it probably won't be as grand as the growing up albums. lofi hip hop is weird. I'm trying to branch out so I don't feel so stuck making such similar music. Hence why this track sounds different from the usual. I hope you all can appreciate that. More importantly I hope you enjoy this song.

For those who are wondering, I did everything for this track and most of my other tracks as well. It's not sampled. I'm the one who's singing. It's fun.
