- chose a couple of different rhythmic pieces of typing to lead the rhythm of the song
- chopped up pieces of the typing as well into a drum rack, pitch-shifted and time-stretched to make a kit to support the song in addition to the pure typing samples
- had synth drones / cello plucks
- sidechained whitenoise to "kick" typing note
- recorded myself whispering the words of what I typed and reversed them

Disquiet Junto Project 0483: Type Set
The Assignment: Use a recording of yourself typing something as the underlying rhythmic track for a piece of music.

Step 1: You’re going to use a recording of yourself typing something as the underlying rhythmic track for a piece of music.

Step 2: Give some thought as to what you’re going to type. You might re-type something that already exists. You might type freeform, just associating ideas. You might type randomly. Arguably, the best thing to do is to think of something you want to write about, and then type that: Typing something you’re writing in your head will lead to momentary pauses where you consider things, and that will be infused into the cadence.

Step 3: Record yourself typing the text you decided upon in Step 2.

Step 4: Use the unedited recording from Step 3 as the rhythmic and underlying percussive element of a piece of original music. It’s preferable that you retain the recognizable sound of the typing.

„pan dora“ is based on Bernhard Weiss’ music for the butoh-performance „PanD’orA - Shades of Hope“ by DaniMayu and her Company MayuKan. Sounds and fragments of the original soundtrack are condensed into an independent track. „pan dora“ consists exclusively of partially heavily processed recordings of acoustic instruments (gongs, kamalen goni, windchimes, cymbals and tibetan singing bowls) and field recordings.

The performance was to have taken place in Vienna in early November 2020, but had to be cancelled and postponed indefinitely due to a lockdown.

About the piece „PanD’orA - Shades of Hope“:

After 20 years of being a butoh performer and choreographer, DaniMayu revived her Company MayuKan in order to create her new piece „PanD'orA - Shades of Hope“. In her new production Dani Mayu is honouring her body of work by incorporating quotes from over 30 pieces of hers.

Starting from Pandora's Box, the members of the Company show different aspects of hope in the tension between the general positive connotation of today and in the sense of Friedrich Nietzsche, who in „Human, All too Human“ describes hope as the worst of all evils.

Pan Dora

I spent a couple of afternoons re-setting up my double bass, radiassing the bridge and all that jazz. I just wanted to play something soulful afterwords and this is what happened.

Falls Like

this is ¶radio hummingbird’s contribution to this week’s disquiet junto with the serial number 0499. in short, the requirement for this contribution was to record a sound(scape)on top of a field recording as if it was originally part of it.

i have chosen a relatively recent field recording of mine, made in spring this year in rural franconia, germany. it hasn't been released otherwise until now and features a cacophony of birds and countryside sounds. played back within my little 100hp eurorack system, i created dense layers of synth soundscapes and drones on top of the prominently featured bird songs.

a daw or computers were only used for a little mastering in ableton live. easy.

The venerable Gayatri mantra is a meditation on spiritual light. It is considered to be the essence of all mantras; its purpose is to uplift human consciousness. 

The base of “Gayatri” is a field recording of me chanting 108 repetitions of this mantra during a dawn chorus outside my home in Carrboro, North Carolina. I transformed this field recording into an ambient soundscape suitable for playing during quiet work, meditation, yoga, bodywork, cloud-watching, daydreaming, stargazing, gardening, contemplation, and/or slipping into other worlds. 

Each time you play “Gayatri,” you are helping uplift all of human consciousness. 

We need this urgently and now. Please listen often and share it with your communities. I would be so grateful.
