The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: Take your time, trust in yourself, be patient. It should be about the music only. 

About the mix: When moving countries this year, I had a bit of an annual crisis about how to balance developing my sound while staying true to my musical identity. During the year, I took a lot of time to dig a bit deeper while staying in the realm of progressive house, landing for the most part in the early 2000s. This mix showcases some of my favourite tracks I found while doing so, now more confident than ever in the music I play. When putting this mix together, it was all about including hidden gems, dancefloor weapons and bold basslines to close out 2024 in a strong way, all the while taking a similar approach to curating a club closing or peak time set.

Live recording of my 7 til 10am set for the almighty and fabulous FAW party in NYC!

This is the recording from my set at Parameter 10, Public Works, San Francisco on 17 May 2025. 

The room was comically packed by the time I started (11pm) and the crowd was visibly itching to lift off, but it was so early in the night and the rest of the (stacked) lineup leant so heavily towards UK and bass-heavy music that I decided to leave the dubstep to the professionals, keep it slow and go in the opposite direction: mid 120s, wriggly, psychedelic, gurgly, engrossing, a little weird but also sometimes fun. Maybe on some level I was level preparing myself for Return To The Source in Detroit the following weekend – though ironically I ended up playing much faster and with more broken beats at RTTS than I did here. In any case, I had a blast. Been really enjoying exploring the 120-130 zone recently. Thanks to Nick for having me back, hope you all enjoy the recording.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I have been a music enthusiast since age 9 (playing violin then tenor sax), bought records with my weekly allowance every Friday night when I was a kid. Loved seeing DJs in the 80s but a visit to NYC in 1990 changed my life after hearing the city's DJs "say" different things with their records which were all non-top 40 tunes. A big door opened and I went through never looking back being eclectic as possible.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NYC music scene?
A. I moved to NYC in March of 1998. After 8 months, I became an employee of Satellite Records selling records to every dance music head that rolled through the city. It was both fun and very hard work. After 2001, retail struggled hard so I worked part time jobs at other record shops while I sold records online and did my best to play music I owned that people wanted to hear in the non-loving house music days pre-2009. Stuff like obscure synth, rare disco, italo, ebm and psych rock were my go-tos to play but I still collected house records even if they were just for me to enjoy. In 2009 I partnered with a buddy as a DJ duo then later we named ourselves Wrecked in 2011, a major left turn of a party for the NYC gay/queer nightlife scene which I never had an opportunity to play for. Being accepted by that community truly helped me feel like I finally gave something back to the city that taught and continues to teach me so much.

Q. Tell us about this mix.
A. The mixes on Juanita's are a great example of Brooklyn's finest and friendliest DJs. Since the series was launched, many of the mixes are helping me through these heavy modern times so I wanted to give back what those mixes gave me which is comfort and joy.  My approach was to include bumping, patient, soulful, dubby and trippy music. Something to help you relax yet dance nice and easy to...or get your head nodding, raising the volume as you chill with your friends on the couch. I had a wonderful time making it so a tremendous thank you for asking me to contribute.
