The subway lights gave off a clinical glare as they flickered frantically above head. Every night, waiting for her train, she wondered whether anybody had been told to fix them, probably not... She scanned along the platform, analysing the characters waiting patiently for the train to come. In her head she'd imagine their lives, dream up their names and envisage the places they were making their journey to. What was their story? She'd never truly know.

NYC-based label and blog Palms Out have revealed the first in a series of compilations that will benefit different charities who are working to counteract the effects of broken windows policing. The overarching aim is to raise awareness of the ways in which policing and prosecuting low level offences serves to traumatise and disproportionately affect marginalised groups rather than prevent crime.

Titled End Broken Windows, the first compilation features music from the likes of Martyn Bootyspoon, Garneau, Carli, SUMORAI and many more, who were all given the brief to write music inspired by the subway/metro, a place where broken windows policing is widespread.

All profits from the first volume will be donated to the SBB National Sex Worker Bail Fund, as sex workers are often intersectionally and inordinately affected by these practices.

END BROKEN WINDOWS Vol. 1

PREMIERE: M.Bootyspoon - Ghosted [Palms Out]

On ACEN043 we welcome Istanbul-born, Strasbourg-based artist Vod Kasat. On their debut solo release, they showcase their broken, leftfield sound with an expansive 6 track EP.

Title track Mavi Maskara opens the record with glitched breaks and pummeling sub bass before propelling into the groove. Cavernous, fluctuating pads enter the mix, adding an atmospheric edge to this rolling percussive work-out.

Next up, Soap enters with staggering percussion and dubbed-out chords before launching into a high-octante electro-inspired rhythm. Cutting arpeggios drive us forward as disorientating sound design drifts through the mix.

Passenger Princess lowers the tempo significantly, alternating between super-time-stretched breaks and slo-mo gabber kicks. The disorientating groove progresses as a whirring siren hovers above.

Dur U kicks off the second half of the record in a tom-driven house groove. Overdriven, haunting vocals glide through the mix as Vod Kasat hits us with arresting, industrial percussion.

15 Feb opens with mangled breaks before entering into a chaotic, high tempo rhythm. A heavily distorted synth provides the hook as hard-hitting kicks command the dancefloor.

Closing track Raindrops On My Tongue opens in contrastingly serene fashion with waterdrops and ethereal pads. Heavy kicks and hectic percussion dance between glitchy melodies before experimental sound design brings the EP to a close.

Born and raised in South London, Fiyahdred has been on a journey. Formerly known as Bamz, their journey began at the age of six when they started beatboxing before moving onto music production at the age of 10. Growing up surrounded by music, with their parents and brother introducing them to music varying across hip hop, R&B, garage, reggae and lovers rock to name a few, it's no surprise that they ended up on this creative path. In 2011, Fiyahdred left school to pursue music production under the Bamz moniker where they self-released consistently and successfully, growing a strong fanbase with the UK funky community and beyond. However, this consistently led to burn out and a two-year hiatus where Fiyahdred fell out of love with music. It was during this period where the name change to Fiyahdred took place and things started to align. Not only a creative decision but a personal one, Fiyahdred stepped into this new chapter feeling inspired and passionate about music again. Solidifying the next chapter, Scratcha DVA linked Fiyahdred with Hyperdub who released their first EP under the new moniker and with that strong support from the get go, everything clicked into place. Since that moment, Fiyahdred has played a notable back-to-back set with fellow Hyperdub affiliate Ikonika for Boiler Room's takeover at KOKO with additional gig highlights including fabric and We Out Here last summer. 

What feels like just the beginning for the Fiyahdred project, we caught up with the dynamic producer to chat about what that name change meant for them, slowing down, relationship with social media, mentorships and their approach to their upcoming all night long tour.

Phyzikal Flex delivers four bombs from his vaults on this 12”. The EP features two revised and polished versions of his cult classic album “Keeping It Real Since 92” on Doom Chakra Tapes from 2017, plus two unreleased tracks - all now for the first time on vinyl. 

Parallax & Doom Chakra joint forces on this PARADOOM 0001 release in order to finally release these four long-awaited gems on wax. The release will be delivered in a unique hand-sprayed sleeve, each record will have hand-stamped labels and also included will be a batch of collectable stickers from both labels.

Before we dive into new Ruffhouse joints, we’d first like to point out that this EP is dedicated to Tommi, the guy who always had positive energy. We will remember his outstanding personality forever.

After a short hiatus due to these uncertain times, Ruffhouse Industries is back on track to deliver the much anticipated debut EP „Energia“ by Helsinki’s club music stalwart Koala. 

Linked up with Ruffhouse in 2014 through Desto’s Signal Life Radio show, he became a mainstay of Munich’s notorious Club music collective on account of his presence on every Rufftrax compilation up to date. 

„Energia“ is all about the dancefloor, although it kicks off with a rather mellow – in relation to the common Ruffhouse standards – track entitled „Laisser“, driven by swinging percussion and an eerie synth reminiscing of a Sci-Fi scenario from outer space.

On „I Came To Steal Your Dancers“, Koala’s intentions of shelling the dancefloor come to light as the track kickstarts into an obviously UK-Funky inspired Club banger equipped with hard hitting vocal chops, drum rolls and a bone rattling low end bassline.

The following title track of the EP represents the essence of Koala’s predilection for marching drums, growling sound effects and clanking percussions. Needless to say that „Energia“ lives up to its name and provides a huge funky factor.

From what started with a massive Ruffhouse crew gathering in an unknown cabin, maybe somewhere in the Transylvanian woods, Koala took the sound files and distilled another veritable banger. “Cabin II” definitely 2 steps into Garage, once again bringing those distinguishing delay drum effects that we love so deeply.

Cakeshop resident and Ruffhouse member Mignon from Seoul put his hands on “Laisser”. His remix provides a subtler approach to the harmonics and percussion while having the vibe on lock.

In order to round up this EP Strict Face steps into the ring. He is pretty well known for his releases on NLV and Local Action. The Aussie redefined “Energia”, and the artist’s name is exactly what you gonna make when you hear this track for the first time. Angry, noisy and distorted sounds are what he assigns to the original.
