Diane, this is DDD, This song, is called Death Bag, We came up with this one on the 3rd night of our One Eyed Jack's open mic residency. Stone was playing his baritone guitar and so it sounds a bit dark. Phillip was in a strange mood this evening, Diane, as he refused to drink anything unless it had an umbrella in it. Not a real umbrella, but one of those drink umbrellas. Stone & Coop kept stealing the umbrellas out of his drinks and putting them in their hair. "The Beatles didn't make a good record of it. I think subconsciously sometimes we - I say 'we,' though I think Paul did it more than the rest of us; Paul would... sort of subconsciously try and destroy a great song.

"Pseudonyms was probably the 4th or 5th song we recorded for the album. D3 began it and sent me the drums and piano to work with. Technically something went wrong, as the software I was using didn't realize it was 48 Khz instead of 44. HA. The result was me leaving the piano part on repeat and never being able to completely be in tune with it. It was only after consulting with our Genius producer, Russ Sinfield, that we solved the problem and I could actually play in tune with D3. This was the first and last time this problem occurred. We had fun on this one and even had Captain Sinfield bring his master fingers to lay down a solo for us. Hope you enjoy as much as we did making it. Cheers!!"

Diane, Phillip Jeffries here, phoning in from an undisclosed location with that info for you. Let’s just say I’m somewhere off the TVC15, and leave it at that.

So when I first met D3, I had no idea he was even a musician. I was in Downtown Denver, shopping in a bookstore of all things. My current reality was in a touring rock band, and had been wandering cities on our tour to try and find a copy of a Simone de Beauvoir book, and for about six months and most of America I seemed to be having absolutely no luck. So I walked immediately to the desk of this particular store that day, which is where D3 was working. He had a stack of books on either side of him and was holding a phone with a shoulder and had glasses he seemed to be searching for pushed into his blonde spiky hair. From the back and the way he was dressed in his orange dress shirt, black dungarees and crooked checkerboard tie, I thought it was 1983 for a moment, and I had to check my phone to make sure I hadn’t, in fact, traveled back in time to 1983 or was maybe having one of those flashbacks Stoney warned me about.

Anyway, I went up to this Sting looking fellow and asked him if he had a copy of the Mandarins when he got off the phone. After a few moments of fast typing, he said “computer says I have one upstairs, I’ll take you there” and I told him I could go myself, but he informed me that he was going anyway, gesturing to the stacks of books on the desk. He did find my book, and we spoke briefly about how we each were musicians and had a gig that night.

After my show at an undisclosed venue that may or may not be named after a popular soft drink or perhaps a bank, I decided to cool my jets at a local bar with my book, as is my custom. Who should I see at the piano in the bar but D3, playing a variety of 80’s television theme songs as romantic piano pieces much to the dismay of the tiny audience. We struck up a conversation, went back to his apartment after his performance, and it turned out after about half a bottle of Colorado whiskey, that he played guitar also, as that was the night we first jammed the basic chords to this song. This was also the night I first got his email address. (He still refuses to carry a phone and that is why he now leaves his messages for you via singing telegram)

When the two of us finally presented our idea to Stoney years later in Keep the Fear, it was just after an intense period he spent alone in which he wrote a tremendous amount of lyrics that he now had a backlog of, and one that was PERFECT for these chords. We worked out the song in a matter of hours, and that’s when I broke out the ‘ol Colorado whiskey again, and Stoney and I got him to do that little guitar solo once he had a few shots in him.

Coop's been busy working his day job but has been keeping up by showing up with rehearsed drum parts. Coop's a workaholic. Tell him I have his recorder, but I keep forgetting the tapes at D3's place. 

Hope you’re not lonely out there Diane, but I’m out. I think demons are chasing me, and I gotta go.

“Hi Diane, Phillip Jeffries checking in. I have to say things got a little strange last night. The band took a little break from the studio to get a bite at a local diner here, and as usual, I brought a fresh batch of my “special” mushrooms which I always add to my meals to help with creativity. I often will put a couple on my hamburger just to spark ideas, so I have quite the tolerance… USUALLY. These were a little different. So strong, in fact, that I forgot I had taken some BEFORE we went to the diner, and put more on my plate soon as the meal arrived, then got lost in the diner and sat down in Coop’s seat somehow. 

What happened after that is kind of fuzzy, though I do remember Coop getting up on the counter talking about space dragons at some point, I think. And some of the most incredible drumming I’ve ever seen him do. 

Now we have this new song, and I have all these text messages from DDD and SXC saying how I should prepare Cooper’s meals from now on. 

I better sign off, Diane. I need to sleep for about three days straight. Good thing I'm not the singer in this band.

The four of us have been holed up in a cabin studio of undisclosed location for a while, and Autumn is upon us. Let's just say that I'm a city boy and not used to using a fireplace for heat. And it's a good thing I'm currently keeping my hair short. 
Anyway, my little "accident" had Coop laughing pretty hard, then he started up this badass beat, and we all fell in line. It started with D3 and I, First I started jamming a fuzz bass line that he doubled with a mono synth - and next thing you know, Stoney has a whole song written.  He goaded D3 to do some backing vocals, and  He compromised by heavily effecting his voice. Stoney thinks he sounds like like the Devil. 
I'm off for some burn cream now, I will report back when we get more recorded. And I really should stop smoking.

Fire Is The Devil (Hiding Like a Coward In The Smoke)

I have become convinced in recent months that I am being chased by demons of some sort.

In order to help protect myself, I trained an individual to use all of my mannerisms and dominant personality traits whom now dresses as I do to "bait" the thing away from me so I can escape.

I thought it was a good idea that he and I spend a good deal of time together so that he could best imitate me, however he has begun to even LOOK like me, and now, I'm not sure if I am myself or if I am him, who's memories I even have, or who's really coming up with these bass lines.

"Diane, this is Stone Catcherye, I'm with Phillip, who has been in sole possession of this recorder for a while now, but at the moment, he's currently running around in my backyard digging holes with this super old and crusty looking shovel. He's been on a kick about shovels for a while now and at the time he was ranting to me about shovels, he said he didn't own one. So, the next time we rehearsed I had told D3 & Coop about it and we wrote this new tune, half mocking PJ. Two weeks later and he currently owns 4,237 different makes and sizes of shovels. "Hi Diane, it's Phillip. I have retrieved the recorder back from Stoney and have concluded my fascination with shovels. It's been some time since our last tune and for good reason. D3 went through a bit of a funk, and at one point set off to some undisclosed "mind" farm, where they cleanse your chakras and feed you weird foods to re-balance your whole biosphere. Life was rough and tumble for a spell and he needed to meditate, hard. The funny thing, the ironic thing, he returned with not spiritual enlightenment, but a Baritone guitar, or a 6 string bass. whatever you want to call it. He said he found it at the retreat in the loo. He said, the whole camp was a sham and the baritone guitar was the only thing that helped him get back to himself. 

Music therapy, Diane, I'm all for it. Plug in and play more. It drives the demons away. 

Also, sorrow's not always a negative thing, sometimes we need to be on the other side of the coin to appreciate and gain inspiration. If it drives inspiration, it's a good thing.

The Cave

"Diane, something happened last week that proved to be life changing. I went to a local music store in a town where I was holed up on an 
undercover mission. Nothing too intense, just some normal stake out kind of procedures. My cover allows me to practice my drums while I'm 
on duty. Best case ever. 

Anyway, Diane, while at said music store, trying to find a certain obscure ride cymbal, the store clerk who was helping me managed to drop a 
drum machine on my kick foot, giving me two hairline fractures. Diane, remind me to send a thank you card to the store clerk. I believe his name was 
Bradlee. He was very kind and helpful. 

While laying on the floor in pain, realizing I wouldn't be able to drum for a while, even if I did find that cymbal when I made it back to me feet, 
I decided I should let fate intervene and buy the drum maching that landed on my kick foot. Diane, D3 was right, the digitakt is a machine not to be 
taken lightly, pun intended.

"Diane, second song we completed in lockdown. Stoney's funny to watch when he's trying to decipher melodies over a cell phone through a video screen.

On this tune we were able to record D3 through the cell phone, but we had to wire it to an old telephone jack Stoney had from 1984. 

I think you could feel our pent up 'pent up' anger in this one.

I think the title from this came from Stoney being drunk one night at the pub before the lockdown saying to a drunk asshole that if he saw him on the street he would throw a car at him. Of course at the time, I was tripping on mushrooms and I had a completely different idea of what he was talking about. D3 would know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. Diane, it's refreshing to hear D3's energy again! 

Diane, I can't even lift a car right now. I'm leaving Paris and going to an undisclosed cabin location. Coop was right about the French woman. She can't make doughnuts.
