I am really excited to share the next Deep Mind Music mix, made by my good friend Amphybian (fka Harry). Over the course of nearly two hours, Amphybian takes us on a wistful and mysterious journey, balancing density and effervescence in a slowly evolving and thoughtfully programmed narrative ☁️🕊️

The first half of the mix takes us up through thick clouds into flight above the earth, providing a vast sense of scale and a humbling perspective. I felt as if I was soaring through the stratosphere, at once both infinite and infinitesimal. As the mix unfolds, mossy carpets of drones and fluttering arpeggios carry us across a limitless expanse, thoughts and details slipping in and out of focus as we spiral inwards 🌀

In the second half of the mix, moments of joy give way to moments of sorrow, coiling into quiet eddies of emotion. The density of sounds slowly evaporate away into more subtle sonic touches and muted colours. I see a wet woodland after rainfall, a dust mote peeking through darkened branches, and the trickling of dewdrops on my skin.

As the mix concludes, and we gently ascend to wakefulness, I’m left with the blissful feeling of a misty sunrise after a darkened dawn. As the evenings grow dark, trees turn, and the air chills, this mix provides the perfect soundtrack for the seasonal shift to introspection 🌙🤍🍂

For our 31st podcast, we are delighted to welcome Berlin-based artist and sound designer Toxido Mask. Her track Along the Vibe, released last summer on Pregnant Void's Ember Oasis compilation, lingered in our minds with its unique, modern yet deeply emotional touch. In this mix, she leads us through a rich soundscape of haunting atmospheres and subtle emotion—a captivating odyssey through untamed realms, where mysterious vocals merge with tribal rhythms, evoking a world both mystical and raw.

Teasing dread atmospheres and zooming in on microscopic details that bring every beat in every bar to life, Seb Uncles returns to Samurai Music with another deep dive into his exquisitely crafted, cinematic progression of the drum & bass tradition.

Even a cursory glance at the Eusebeia back catalogue tells you Uncles is an artist committed to the storytelling promise of breakbeat culture. His work has been heavily tipped towards albums since he first broke through around 2015, and across more than 10 long-players he's cultivated a strong line in moody, evocative jungle and drum & bass more concerned with world-building and subtle detail rather than aggression and intensity.

Following up on his 2023 LP for Samurai, X, on Undertones Uncles applies his signature meditative tones to a broad expanse. There's a consistent sound palette that leans on the warm snarl of monosynth low end and aqueous pads, delicately edited breaks and crisply sculpted synth percussion, but Uncles moves with dexterity around different tempos and structures within this considered sound world. The overarching notion is one of things lurking beneath the surface — a comfortably open theme to be approached and understood from any number of angles. It certainly chimes with the upfront detail and brooding tension that gives the Eusebeia sound such depth.

There are moments of direct drum pressure, such as fierce opener 'Undertones' with its diced-up breaks and icy chords, the boisterous jungle dread of 'Uncover' and chasmic roller 'Root Out', but on the likes of 'Beneath The Surface' and 'Out In The Open' it's the mellow elements that take precedence over the deft drum science. The motion is persistent and nuanced, but it's achieved without deferring to default dancefloor tropes.

'Emergence' marks a pointed shift towards a delicate strain of techno that maintains the album's sound at a mid-paced pulse, focusing on synth shapes and textures to achieve propulsion with only the lightest of drum parts. Alongside the energetic intrigue of Uncles' sonic choices, the melodic make-up of the track is a compelling showcase for his emotionally ambiguous approach, both rousing and chilling in the same curious chord shapes.

From the half-time prowl of 'Lifting The Veil' to the creeping textures and haunted phrasing of 'Brought To Light', Undertones is another stunning exercise in widescreen jungle. It flows naturally from the rich body of work Uncles has cultivated over the past 10 years while carving out its own unique pocket — a reminder if you needed one of the profound sound bedded into the Eusebeia project.

Bernstein is the vision and music project by Matthias Smith, a young creative mind from Switzerland. Currently living in Berlin, Bernstein aims at luring the audience into his vortex of never-ending colours, spherical streams and atmospheres. His sound palette exceeds the standardized deep house and techno sounds by finding timbres and textures through experimental approaches. "This mixtape is a sonic journey through a nocturnal, dreamlike landscape. I spun a web around the track selection using my own field recordings from India that I made a year ago and also used for my latest album ‘tirtha’ released on @hyalinrecords . I wanted to build oneiric layers of sound, all based on a meditative focal point and hypnotic pulsations"

The next Deep Mind Music comes from one of my dearest friends, and greatest inspirations - hems

hems and I have a special connection, we both love to adventure through musical lands strange and beguiling, evocative and unusual, and have spent many hours together digging through obscure backcatalogs or making our own noises experimenting with hems’ many synthesisers in his studio in London 🧡

hems plays music like no one else I know, he has a magic touch and deep sensitivity for representing all shades of human existence. From the sublime to the transcendent, the unsettling to the hilarious, hems’ sets takes listeners to the beyond and then further still.

I first invited hems to make a mix many years ago, so I am very happy to finally welcome an entry from him. This recording is the first 2.5 hours of an all-night 8 hour set hems played at an intimate private gathering in Mexico City in March of this year.

In this recording hems coaxes us to drift inwards, to enter into an unusual landscape, to open up to all the elements of sound, contrasting pre-Hispanic music with vintage synthesizer tracks and much more.  

Listening to hems’ sets over the years has expanded my mind towards new possibilities, his selections and genius touch for programming evoking many deep epiphanies and insights. This mix is brimming with vitality and life, I hope you enjoy this kaleidoscopic voyage into the mystical 🌿 ~

Alongside DJing, hems produces very deep and intricate experimental electronic music I highly recommend checking out, often utilitising spatial audio systems or even playing gongs live, and he also runs the amazing Titrate records with @o-utlier, as well as his own mix series @hardcore-chillout with @EightFoldWay
