While creating an original cumbia soundtrack for a boxing documentary, collaborating on new material, and working on his Remolido project with Lido Pimienta, el Remolón has been creating remixes for global dancefloors. This fall El Remolón digs back into Argentina's past to remix the legendary folklore star Mercedes Sosa's version of "Guitarra Dimelo Tú" , interpreting the original song by Atahualpa Yupanqui.

Following the path of former African Shakedown releases we proudly present the new generation of brazilian extravaganza. The Brazilian Shakedown brings you a selection of psychedelic remixes, edits and originals by the freshest brazilian producers of today. By merging their cultural heritage and understanding of contemporary dance music they create a unique musical style.

The journey takes off with D-Edge Resident DJ Marcio Vermelho from Sao Paulo, who combines a bouncing brazilian groove, mesmerizing synth stabs and a catchy vocal hook in a way you never heard before. Followed by one of brazil's most talented new producers, Carrot Green from Rio, turns a brazilian folk song into a deep and hypnotic house anthem.

Flip over and our host Noema takes you down the rabbit hole, by turning two compositions with custom made marimba-like instruments into one trippy jam. Thomash, part of the legendary Voodoohop collective from Sao  Paulo rounds off this 12" by conjuring a classical brazilian round dance into an acidized late night procession.

This beautiful vinyl only 12" comes with a cover illustration by Porto  Allegre based artist Daniel Eizirik.

BRAZILIAN SHAKEDOWN

Marking the 50th anniversary of Terry Riley's pioneering masterpiece ‘In C’, Africa Express will release the first African version of the minimalist classic, 'Africa Express presents… Terry Riley's In C Mali'. This new version was recorded at the Maison des Jeunes youth club in Bamako, Mali in 2013, and is led by young contemporary conductor André de Ridder. The album features the cream of new artists from Bamako, among them Adama Koita, Bijou, Cheick Diallo, alongside Africa Express stalwarts Damon Albarn, Brian Eno and Nick Zinner. Co-produced and mixed by Andi Toma (Mouse on Mars), the album will be released via Transgressive Records on digital formats on 24th November, with a CD and limited edition vinyl following 26th January 2015.

One simple way to describe how this project came about, Off-the-cuff! Concepts and ideas were thrown back and forth from Zimbabwe to France via email. But because of busy scheduling nothing was actually agreed upon. So, what to do? Three days were spent in a studio, with nothing but music as our spiritual offering. This is three days before The Monkey Nuts, Hope Masike and DJ OIL were meant to perform at one of Africa’s biggest festivals, The Harare International Festival of the Arts. 
These recordings are an act of impulse, an intermingling of culture and sound, spaced out across two continents. DJ Oil, The Monkey Nuts and Hope Masike present: Boombap Idiophonics.

We have released several of Brazilian jazz legend Dom Salvador’s records on Mr Bongo. He worked with artists including as Elis Regina, Jorge Ben and Edu Lobo and led Salvador Trio, as well as releasing under his own name. Dom lives in New York and plays a Hotel piano bar daily.

‘Barumba’ is an uptempo funk-jazz monster with heavy drums and piano right from the off. Soaring horns add to the drama.

Originally released on his self titled LP on CBS Brazil in 1974.


Morre o burro, Fica o Homem is the third Osmar Milito track to feature in our Brazil 45’s series. A classic samba-rock track; funk drums fills and punchy horns underpin the MPB vocals, building in tempo slightly over the track. The song was originally written by Jorge Ben.

Taken from his expensive and hard to find ‘Nem Paletó, Nem Gravata’ LP released on ATCO Brazil in 1973.

‘Assiyo Bellema’ – Mulatu goes afro-latin, plus steel drums courtesy of Frank Holder. Assiyo Bellema was recorded during Mulatu’s time in London, during which he met Frank, along with many others including Tubby Hayes and Joe Harriott.

‘Hasabe’ was originally released on Amha in 1969. Soaring Ethiopian vocals and horns create a classic Ethiopian sound. Teshome Meteku was leader of Soul Ekos Band - they lived together! - and were very active in Addis in the 1960’s.

Wonderwheel Recordings is very proud to present the long awaited debut album Bennu by Queens, NY based produced Thor Partridge, aka Thornato. Building up a name for himself over a number of years as a proficient and in-demand remixer, Thor’s breakout tune “Gaita Gaita” has been sampled thousands of times by producers all over the world, and has become a certified hit record in South America. A string of remixes and a couple of rare song releases later, Thor’s groundbreaking Things Will Change EP was released via Wonderwheel in 2016 garnering massive buzz and record sales, resulting in a European tour that summer, and a Boiler Room performance in the fall.

Bennu represents a giant leap forward for Thornato, as he showcases his chops in crafting dancefloor gems from the ground up. While the electronic production of the album provides a strong backbone, Thor has carefully selected artists from Jamaica, Ecuador, South Africa, Colombia, Canada and beyond to breathe live energy into each song. From the massive bass driven energetic dancehall vibes of “Rhinoceros” featuring veteran chat master Gappy Ranks, to earth shattering chopped up African dancefloor sounds of “Chagamei” to the contemplative Flamenco influenced deep house sound of “Welwyn”, and moving into the uplifting & soulful dembow vibes of “Tu Luz” featuring Lido Pimentia – Bennu is an album that carefully navigates through the globe while maintaining a cohesive and consistent feel from start to finish.
