A captivating song of warning, written by William Walker and a special hymn by Charlotte Elizabeth that has me thinking more about each line:

203 Cumberland from the Christian Harmony: this song is without a doubt one of the finest harmonies and settings of an American hymn. I believe it is a triumph of the genre, credit being to both its author, Henry Alline of Nova Scotia and New Hampshire, and its composer Ananias Davisson. Its arrangement and the subsequently added alto enrich it even further. I hope this finds you well!

This has gone unsung for a long time, though it is certainly one of 'big' Sacred Harp pieces of the past. In several recordings of it at Conventions, (perhaps always the lesson of the same leader) the class immediately flies into 354 Happy Land  as a sort of rousing chorus in the same, well, very high key as 350. Does anyone know if this was a popular 2-song lesson to restore energy to the class, or whether this was something one leader did wherever (she?) went? *in most recordings that have both, a female voice begins Happy Land.*

At any rate, I've chosen to do that here, and I hope you enjoy this quirky, shouty anthem by B.F. White, ca.1850. I did not sing the Denson alto from the 36 ed.

This started as a sort of outpouring of nostalgia towards the white book sound, and with songs like Noah's Dove in my ear,  and a lot of neglected 3 part harmonies in that and the Cooper book,  Which is not to say there isn't a better selection of those  With alto parts-  There are simply many 3 part songs from mid 19th century Georgia that are never sung who take after the southern harmony mechanics. In this way, The Happy Time was conceived in 3 parts, and I added the alto later.

I'll be sad to see it go but I think it's one of the best songs for its words; it's a favorite of mine.

Here, I have begun the attempt to recreate the feeling of the earliest sacred harp quartet recordings such as were done in the early 20's. One goal was to just get the parts sounding nice and accented but ultimately I thought the effect was a charming one, so there will surely be more on the burner soon. Who doesn't enjoy the sound of an old record? I do this out of admiration for those early recordings, but also because it would be neat to have sung with some of those singers on the porch! Enjoy! Higher fidelity versions may surface...I think these actually sound pretty old!

I was steeply in a hurry when I recorded this in 15 minutes or so...Not as thorough an attention to togetherness or smoothness, but it is a complete track nonetheless! 'Tis the season for 81b!

Invitation from the Sacred Harp, also a bit of a hasty run through but a tricky one to do. I'm curious what it sounds like in 4/4.

It's not often sung. I suppose one may take some liberties with it- I'm sorry again for the tuning of parts and the timing- I was in a large space for the first time to record these and it was nice in person, but the acoustics totally betrayed my ear on the recording. Oh well. Charming piece no less...hopefully.

This is one of my songs whose style doesn't fit the bill for my project, but I thought I'd sing it to hear how it sounds. I like the key of D Flat for a tune, though I likely keyed it higher than others might, since, as has been repeatedly stated, I'm no bass! Here is a piece I wrote last fall called Ambler. Indeed I keyed it low. 

Words by Samuel Stennett which I mined from the M.E. Church South Hymnal. I included them all. 

1 Thy life I read, my gracious Lord,
With transport all divine;
Thine image trace in every word,
Thy love in every line.

2 Methinks I see a thousand charms
Spread o'er thy lovely face,

Ambler CM (Keillor)

Here is, I guess, my favorite piece I wrote this year, called Willow, named for a small town in the Catskills. One of my favorite pieces in the Christian Harmony is Samanthra, for how it treats these amazing words by Joseph Swain. But I always found myself singing them to my own tune, which I later harmonized into this piece. I hope it finds you well!

As a funnier side-note, with headphones one might here light chatter in the background, which is the sound of the pizza guy getting the door while I was singing the tenor line. My roommate intercepted the confused Philadelphia man, allowing me to finish the line, however I sang just one verse!

There is loss all around our community so I decided to sing this and another, granted I try not to strain my voice these days. I encourage you to sing along, if you need to!

Here's a song that comes to mind for many reasons and for many people I know who are suffering under the weight of loss, and for those who are no longer suffering. First real song I ever heard!

The photo was taken at the west entrance to "deep hollow" which connects the small farming town of Lithgow, NY to the ironworks at Wassaic. Noteworthy for bearing the clear mark of Richard Upjohn, who also built a chapel like it on the other side of the hollow.

Canaan's Land 101t (Sacred Harp)

This is the other piece I sang. I hope that it finds you well! Hope you're not thrown off by my tempo. All the best to you, and I concur with Hayden's thoughts about missing singing. 

The photo is of the Roxbury O.S. Baptist church in the Catskills, where I believe there's a bi-annual(?) singing out of a 7 shape hymnal, which is increasingly uncommon up here. Nearby there's a remarkable 19th century stone bridge and a huge ravine and waterfall where they would baptize; it is so lovely a spot, and such a ways off from town, they surely built it for that natural feature.

Here I have sung 222 Ocean, one of my favorite songs. I have somehow gone without recording it this whole time. I thought this photo from Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Maine was fitting for the song. You can see that very lighthouse and many other beautiful scenes at the Maine Singing! While this song doesn't give me a taste of lobster, the photo does!

222 Ocean (The Sacred Harp)

I've been thinking about tunes that work with the 12s & 11s hymns, since I enjoy how they are often quite dense; their melodies can cover a lot of ground in a short space. Some of them are among my favorites, like 360, The Royal Band, by W.T. Power, words from Mercer's Cluster. 

What are some of your favorite tunes for this meter?

I believe the church there is in Livingstonville, which is small village in the Catskills west of Rensselaerville. The vantage point there is looking over my shoulder just as I wove East into the hollow which contains the small assemblage,(surely known as) Hauverville, for which that way is named. There is cemetery on the left once you emerge from the hollow, just a ways after the delaware turnpike begins, that seems to lie equidistant from Livingstonville and Rensselaerville, which suggests there may have been more dwellings along that route at an earlier time in the 19th century than have been maintained today.

Just a piece that combines some of my favorite elements from this sort of F Major 3/4 tune, also with some of my favorite words by John Fawcett, Thy way, O God, is in the sea...

The photo is of old main street in Hurley, NY, the valley beside which whose corn fields have been maintained for thousands of years!

New London CM (Keillor)

Here is an intriguing piece of music from the Old Harp that many of you are familiar with- it is a gem I had hoped to hear this past summer! I miss singing with you all! 

When on an adventure with Hayden, we took "Blue Grass Trail" from Eagle Rock, VA (old rt. 612) to the valley you see a sliver of in this picture: I had a choice between the church edifice behind me and the view (I took a giant panorama though, don't worry). We're on the burial ground of the Oxford Presbyterian Church, ca. 1868, one three or four area meetings of Presbyterians who settled west of Lexington, VA in the 1750s. The person commemorated in the foreground is a certain Capt. James Hall of the local militia whose 18th century stone house is a mile south along Buffalo Creek. What a pretty valley!

Paradise LM 68 Old Harp

The Family Bible, is one of those tunes you can sing for hymns in the 12s & 11s meter, but I have never imagined singing it to another hymn, neither perhaps has it ever been- I just don't know. Great tune.

Here is a picture of the very house-like Quaker Meetinghouse in Purchase, NY, which is a faithful reconstruction from the 20th century of the identical one which stood there from 1727 on, until a fire in 1919.
