Detroit dance music thrives on intergenerational connections. In the late '70s and early '80s, the late Ken Collier mixed disco, soul and early electronic dance music in eye-opening DJ sets that left a mark on up-and-coming artists like Delano Smith. Once Smith established himself in the city's explosive techno community, he, in turn, influenced soon-to-be legends like Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Jeff Mills, Norm Talley, Mike "Agent X" Clarke and others.

Now an elder statesman, Smith is etched into our history books as a crucial contributor to Detroit dance music, both house and techno. He's known especially for the Detroit beatdown sound he pioneered alongside Talley and Clark—slower, sexier records than what Detroit techno is generally associated for. (The trio even put out an RA Podcast under the name in 2010.) 

It's more recently that Smith has become known as a producer. He started his own label, Mixmode Recordings, and became a regular on Berlin imprint Sushitech, where he released many of his albums, including the jazzy deep house masterclass An Odyssey. His style has evolved over the years to incorporate ambient, dub and more contemporary techno influences.

More recently, Smith's career has been sidelined by an ongoing battle with a rare and untreatable form of cancer. He's hosted livestreams throughout his ordeal to keep in touch with his fans. His RA Podcast, which he calls his "Legacy Mix," is a celebration of his favourite sounds: euphoric chords, jacking drums and deep-space melodies, the elements that have and will continue to reverberate through Detroit and beyond. It also marks the beginning of a more hopeful period for Smith, as he gets ready to travel again, especially with his Legacy Detroit series, which celebrates the lineage he's an indelible part of, and always will be.

This week's mixtape is a very special affair to celebrate another fifth anniversary. Earlier this week you may remember our special premiere from the '5 Years Of Needwant' compilation, and now we have another amazing label hooking up with us to celebrate their fifth anniversary - it's the infallible Keinemusik.

Known for their deep, emotive productions, beautiful artwork on every release and, of course, superlative DJ sets the Keinemusik family are without a doubt one of the collectives we respect the most out there in the big wide world of house music. In fact, just a couple of months ago &ME's 'After Dark' was one of our top Burning Man tracks... incredible vibes.

The core team at Keinemusik; Rampa, &ME, Adam Port, David Mayer and Reznik have been on tour around Europe for just under a month now, playing spectacular back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back sets in cities such as Vienna, Stuttgart, Istanbul, Oslo, Rome and Moscow and their hometown Berlin of course, where they finish up the tour on November 15th.

Besides the city-hopping, non-stopping tour, the guys have also put together 'Workparty Five' a compilation of music from the team that really showcases what they are all about. Spread across two solid pieces of vinyl, it's an essential purchase which will be available on November 17th.

We've teamed up with the Keinemusik gang to get this mix together and an exclusive interview from the guys too, which you can check out below the mix. So stream or download the podcast and put it on while you're reading the interview.

Keinemusik is a network with the label as the pulse pumping centre. Driven particularly by the spirit that moves the collective behind the imprint. The spirit to find your own agenda and let nobody get in the way. The spirit of refining House and Techno off the beaten path. Be it within their own tracks, within productions of other sorts or DJ-sets. The spirit of recall value within record- and flyer-artworks and everything intermediate in word and image surrounding releases and parties. And the spirit of diversification – Rampa’s effect-gadget-venture TEILE being one example. Keinemusik’s own booking department ‘Worldwide Dancing Club’, established in 2018, being another.

Keinemusik has been around since 2009. It has been naming an existing friendship and linked interests of the four members – &ME, Adam Port, Rampa and Reznik. A more or less constant count of five releases per year have been released ever since, solely laid down by members of the crew. And a considerable count of label-parties went down, not only in Berlin, but around all international focal points for electronic music. And surely, there’s plenty more where those came from. So see you soon in a record store or on a dancefloor in your area!
