TJ Hertz’s first original release since 2014’s critically acclaimed Flatland comes in the form of Objekt #4, a continuation of his club-focused white label series and a tribute to the sadly now defunct Basement Q, a formative and beloved haunt in Berlin’s Schöneberg district which quietly but profoundly shaped the musical identities of Hertz and several of his contemporaries until its final closure in 2012.

“There really was no place quite like it,” remembers Hertz. “Even in the later years when Joe [Call Super] and I would go, the sense of vitality was palpable; you had all these regulars who must all have been pushing 50 years old but still had more energy and passion than any 25 year olds we knew at the time. God only knows what it must’ve been like in the 80s when it opened. I think it changed a bit over the years but I know the horse fresco on the ceiling was there from the start and the custom-built soundsystem too. Bogdan, the sage and amiable but somehow kinda unhinged old Bulgarian dude that owned and built the place, he had this obsession with right angles; he hated them, said they were fascist or something. So everything was slightly askew and you never quite knew which direction was up, much less when he or Emil or one of the other residents were playing. It was disorientating and beautiful and in the midst of such an experience your eyes would offer your brain no valid explanation for the wonderful confusion of sound that your ears were reporting. Meanwhile this old, fabulous, rave-weathered crowd of 40 to 60 people would be gradually losing their shit, feet glued to the floor but bodies flailing as if caught in a hurricane. It was something else.”

The two tracks on Objekt #4 pay tribute to two of the many musical facets of Basement Q in its later years. A-side “Needle and Thread” aims to condense several hours of a Thursday night in the Basement into 9 minutes and 26 seconds, embellishing a hypnotic rolling techno backbone with hyper-detailed atmospherics, enchanting melodies and tight, strident breakbeats. B-side “Theme From Q” is Hertz’s reinterpretation of a Basement Q anthem, owner and founder DJ Bogdan’s own “Love Inna Basement (Morning Dub)”, which never saw an official release despite providing the soundtrack to over 20 years of late morning love-ins in the cellar underneath the Sattler & Söhne glue factory. Together, the two tracks offer an incomplete but nonetheless seductive illustration of one of the most idiosyncratic and overlooked clubs in Berlin’s recent history.

PART 1: starting from 10pm

Last month I played an all-night set at Nowadays in NY, which I’ve described to many friends since as probably the best DJing experience of my life. 

As a DJ you’re constantly seeking a connection with those you play to, and sometimes it’s there, sometimes not. But I have never felt so intimately close to, and in tune with, an audience – whose faces I could barely even see – for the entire duration of a night. 

I’d slept for 2 hours, was jetlagged to the point of delirium and woefully underprepared for a 9-hour set. By the last hour and a half I had a crippling stomach cramp and was falling asleep on my feet. But by some cosmic rave miracle I had somehow slipped into a groove from the beginning and found myself tracing an arc that felt like it was drawing itself, as if all I had to do was relax and watch my own hands play the music. There were moments of intensity and euphoria and nostalgia and energetic catharsis, but throughout the entire set I felt fully empowered to meander in deep, subtle and confounding directions, somehow confident that wherever I went, the dancefloor would follow. 

The final stretch descended into a nostalgic parade of old and poignant favourites which, coming out of a recent period of personal upheaval, kinda knocked me sideways and left me frequently close to tears. I was a physical and emotional wreck by the time I finished. But it was a completely magical experience from beginning to end, which felt shared in a very genuine way by everyone in the room, and honestly I don’t care if anyone would listen to a 9-hour recording these days because I just want there to be a document of the night in its entirety out there for posterity. 

So here you go – a four part recording of the whole set, hopefully conveying at least some of the joy I felt on the night. Heartfelt thanks to Nowadays and to every person who was there. ♥️

This is the recording of my closing set at FOLD, London, on April 14th, 2023. I'd put together the lineup for Transmissions and DJed after Shackleton, CCL and mi-el, and had a really special time playing in a zone I’ve been hugely enjoying this year – fast, headsy, frenetic, tunnelling, kind of psychedelic (but not like explicitly psy), twisting and turning in different directions, all over the place genre-wise but tightly bound in a specific mood and propulsive energy.

Decided to re-record a few transitions on this one and tidy it up a little – it’s more editing than I’d usually do but I wanted to release the best mix I could which would exemplify where my head's been at this year. :)

A sunset set at Waking Life, Portugal, in June 2023. I DJed after Vlada and before Anthony Naples, in front of a beautiful lake with the sun setting behind me and an incredibly wholesome, engaged, positive, locked-in crowd in front of me. Freerotation Festival (a.k.a. the highlight of every year a.k.a. the four best dancefloors on the planet) was on top form this year – it's always a total joy to play and spend the weekend there and I'm really happy to share the recording of my set. I was playing second-to-last on Sunday night in Room 1, between XDB and Sebastian Mullaert, so I figured I'd leave out the drastic tempo shifts and just have A LOAD OF FUN keeping the party going instead, maybe coaxing out a couple of end-of-festival tears in the process.

If you were there then millions of thanks to you, there's no bunch of people I'd rather play to (or hang out with) and I've spent the last 3 days wishing I could go back. Hope you've managed to get through the last few days without almost weeping at the coffee machine. (I've had no such luck.)

Here’s the recording of my Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, which I recorded at the start of 2020 and was broadcast in June. Feeling like I’d been given some big shoes to fill, I spent a couple of months planning a rambunctious, high-energy party mix that would also still be pretty ambitious in the range of styles and tempos it would cover, finally finishing it just as the first lockdowns were kicking in. Obviously, by the time it was eventually broadcast it felt a little out of step with the times. But listening back to it I still feel like it’s one of my better studio mixes, and with the holidays (and a vaccine) around the corner maybe its energy will even feel newly appropriate.
