Step 1: This project builds on the previous one, but you needn’t have participated in project 0544 to do 0545. In project 0544, participants posted tracks for which they wanted feedback from other participants. Familiarize yourself with the discussion here:

Step 2: Pay particular attention to the feedback provided in the comments as the discussion thread proceeds.

Step 3: Choose one bit of feedback, and think about how you might apply it to your own music.

Step 4: Create or make a new track that benefits from what you learned in Step 3.

Step 5: Consider providing feedback to other people’s tracks.

Note: The Lines BBS runs on a discussion platform called Discourse, which has some built-in restrictions. Among these is that you can’t reply too many times to the same thread before someone else replies first. This is a “consecutive replies” matter. The best practice is to compile feedback to multiple tracks, and to tag reach recipient in one reply. If those instructions aren’t clear, just wait a little while after tracks begin to appear on the thread. Soon enough you’ll see examples of people doing exactly this.

Same last week's master reworked and remixed, with great feedback from friends and colleagues (see post here: https://llllllll.co/t/disquiet-junto-project-0545-unself-awareness/56084/11?u=dede)

I did not completely delete and rework from the ground, (considered it as a pretty
I introduced some variation in the new 8 bar sections, dropping tracks completely sometimes for more clarity 
I tried to make a less confusing mix, something that bothered me from the original, albeit keeping the generous amount of melodic-rhythmic stuff)
I tweaked some timing between bass and arp, and added 36 extra seconds, tried to give more focus on the bass and kick that I edited and remixed drastically

and most notably I added some Krautrock drums.

[disquiet0545] Variation

Added some darkness to last weeks track 'No hook ?'

No Hook ? [Dirt Mix] (disquiet0545)

Different piece, but kind of on the same thought process - at least in my compositional conceptualization. This is still very much a work in progress. 

I continue to tinker with the idea of different perspectives - how the “same story” can be told by different people and vary slightly or a lot. I talked about the juxtaposition of natural vs. human-made.

I'm responding to everyone's feedback with this new composition, too. @gis_sweden said my previous track was like several short pieces. So I'm working through this piece differently. I have yet to record the vocal part, so this seems like a useless piece of information for those listening, but I started with the lyrics. My dad was recently diagnosed with dementia. And I keep thinking about memories. How do we share memories if we don't remember any more? Did we even have the same memories even if we experienced something together? 

Anyway, I ended up with sappy lyrics about the times we'd go to the beach in Chiba (we lived in Tokyo), how we'd play in the water all day and our skin would hurt in the bath, how we'd go buy kakigori (shaved ice) after we'd slipped under the futon, and how I insisted I'd get the same flavor as my dad, even though matcha was too bitter for me and I really just wanted the neon colored strawberry ...

When I at first worked on a melody with the lyrics, then set it to a bass line and drums, it ended up super mellow at 90 bpm in e minor ... Then, as fate would have it, my program crashed and I lost the entire piece. I took it as an opportunity to transform it into an upbeat piece, 130 bpm and in G major. So, a different way of tackling the conceptualization of the "same story" from various perspectives AND a way to respond to @gis_ sweden 's comment. 

I also wanted to work on feedback from @howthenightcame - on the notion of the natural vs. the human-made. So, I kept the mellow acoustic sound of the "original" piece in the first 16 bars while really pushing it to become a, well, 80's pop/dance tune.

Remembrance (disquiet0545)

Based on the advice @fake-genius gave to @user-467414884 in the previous Disquiet Junto prompt: "Bass, even some trumpet, can easily be added IMO" this track uses only Ableton's Trumpet from the Orchestral Brass pack and Softube's Monoment Bass, with plenty of modulation and reverb effects.

There’s a message coded into the kick drum track. Imagine a piano roll consisting of 1/4 note divisions. If a kick falls on that beat then the cell is filled, no kick the cell remains blank. Arrange this piano roll into a 16x10 matrix and you’ll crack the code. 
The kick pattern was also run into an arpeggiator and Boolean gate then routed to a Mother 32 and a Neutron to provide some backing.

Disquiet Junto Project 0546: Code Notes
The Assignment: Make music that includes a secret message.

I basically assigned distinct percussion/guitar riffs of 2 beats to each letter of the alphabet.  It felt a little dry so I added a little synth to every instance of the letter E.

The encoded phrase is "We must make our freedom by cutting holes in the fabric of this reality, by forging new realities which will, in turn, fashion us."  It's the first sentence in a longer passage by the anarchist collective, Crimethinc.  I ran across it in David Graeber's book, The Utopia of Rules.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
