Remembering a Connecticut state park where I and a couple friends often visited while we were there in the Navy. It has a 60 foot waterfall and a lazy river you can wade across. It was a quiet, peaceful place with a large hemlock grove with an open understory and lots of large rocks to explore. It was a great place to get away from our usual daily stress. On one visit, from up the hill in the hemlocks there came the sound of a flute player reverberating down the valley.

After doing four orchestral pieces in a row I wanted to do something a bit more laid back, a bit more contemplative. I chose four Pianobook sample instruments at random and what emerged was Emergence.

Emergence

I started this piece with another roll of the dice. I initially chose at random four Spitfire Audio LABS instrument voices. As I worked with them to see what would emerge I replaced one and added a couple others.

This one is meant to be listened to quietly. There isn't an actual sound of a whisper included, but you should be able to hear one if there were. Who knows? You may indeed hear one.

Out Of The Blue

This is a re-orchestration of a piece I originally did in 1995 with only a synth string patch. The name Darden's Hall had just popped up and I have no idea who Darden is/was, or where his hall is. 

I've always wished I could make it sound more orchestral and now that I have access to better orchestral samples (Spitfire Audio's BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover in this case) I decided to redo it.

I still don't know who Darden was.

In A Twinkling

I've had the Vienna Symphonic Library Fujara flute sample instrument for a few months and have wanted to use it in some way because of the unusual sounds it can produce. The fujara flute originates as a folk instrument from Slovakia and is associated with shepherds, hence one part of the title.

This summer my 9 year old grandson Hugo was with us for a few weeks. Occasionally he would plink around on the piano and often repeated a short three-note phrase: E - C - D. I decided to see what I could do with that phrase. I'm also giving him writing credit.

Once Upon A Time...Or, Maybe Twice

Just north of San Francisco, in Muir Woods National Monument is a grove of redwoods named Cathedral Grove. These are the tallest and oldest trees in the park. I saw them once a long time ago and I'm still awed by the memory of them.

For this piece I used BBCSO Core and Epic Choir from Spitfire Audio, and the Pianobook sample pack "Neanderthal Pipe Organ" by Daniel Werner.

The Dreamer Dreams A Dream

Incidental Music For Eyelid Movies (IMforEM). That's the style of music I write and record. It's music to be watched with your eyes closed.

When I was 14 and trying to learn to play guitar no one told me about A440 tuning. I knew how to tune the guitar string to string, but wasn't aware that records and what I heard on the radio had a standard. I soon became frustrated trying to play along with what I heard and began making up my own music. Still at it.
