Before Nashville became the home of country music, the public was fascinated by the cowboy and Hollywood provided an outlet for many singers who went on to become movie stars.  Both Gene Autry and Roy Rogers were recording stars in addition to starring in movies, radio, and television.

Cowboy Songs

The year 1944 was a pivotal year in American history.  With the Normandy invasion, the Allied armies began to control the the battlefield in Europe.  And 1944 was also one of the last years where country music was mixed in with jazz and folk on the Billboard charts.  Nashville was yet to be known as the home of country music but the Grand Ol' Opry was beginning to be a major force in development of the music.
