For No.70 we turn to Amsterdam-based DJ/producer Keith Carnal. With various EP's released on the ARTS collective label, he quickly gained momentum, playing for various festival and Awakenings together with Shlømo during ADE. Now, he focussed his attention to his own label Second Degree (SEC ND°), where he released his first album that's showing his passion for music outside of the 4x4 techno box. In the Netherlands, it's the king birthday, and he's celebrating it was 90 minutes of full-throttle groove.

Terminal V Podcast 038 || Keith Carnal

Keith Carnal returns to his Second Degree label with an impressive four track EP, encompassing a hypnotic & atmospheric sound, but at a higher tempo.

Keith Carnal has been pushing out high octane techno records for the last decade, featuring on labels such as Arts & Bpitch, Keith has assembled an impressive discography. The Amsterdam producer has found himself remixing for industry titan’s such as Ellen Alien, CJ Bolland & more.

Carnal also helms his Second Degree imprint, launched in late 2018 and home to his own solo material. Following on from the labels impressive fifth instalment earlier this year, he returns to round out the year on home turf as he drops four new productions combining slick grooves and infectious vocals with his signature tough yet vibrant sonics.

We premiere the A1, ‘Chauvanistic Pigs’, a hypnotic symphony, the entrancing cut is busting with pacy drums and icy hats as they guide tripped out vocals and warping synths.

This track should be in every techno DJs arsenal, a perfect hypnotic, vocal, tool for the dance floor.

This year celebrates Keith's 10 year of touring as a DJ. In that light, he made a special mix with tracks he often played during the '10s of this century. Just a quick trip down memory lane and a hommage to the many great tracks that were produced in the previous decade! Seeing the scene is moving towards that groovy, more deep sound, this set gives you an insight of how it all started for him. Amsterdam based Keith Carnal has in recent years become seen as somewhat of a tastemaker in today’s world of techno. It might not then come as a big surprise to you that he has also become a favoured producer among many who are seen as “techno mainstay”, gaining support from numerous of his own musical inspirations and champions. Carnal, who grew up in a very musical home in the northern part of Holland, found techno at an early age when he began sourcing and selecting on his own. Techno was, and very much is, the first music that made a deep impression on Keith. This feeling only went on to become more cemented after a few years of composing on his own. It simply became clearer and clearer that Carnal is exactly where he belongs.

Keith’s own style of techno always has a strong emphasis on melodies and groove - it is made for dancing no doubt. Often the melody creates a rather ominous feeling for the listener, but with a certain melancholy to it. This is weighed up expertly with Keith focusing on the tracks being driven forward by strong percussion elements. His compositions contain a fresh vibe that immerses his audience as much as it does with his fellow producer and DJ colleagues. 

Carnal’s own productions very much goes hand in hand with the selections he makes as a DJ. A set of Keith’s always focuses on keeping the tempo and the groove up and going. Classic productions are mixed confidently with more current ones. His sets flourish with tracks that are atmospheric and contain strong melodic segments - tracks where percussion and bass play a major part in why being selected. For Keith Carnal creating the right groove is the main target. This year will see Keith releasing several strong productions as well as continuing his extensive international touring schedule, where he is headlining many of the major festivals and clubs. Keith Carnal is a fresh wind in today’s techno climate.
