To be a page-turner = very engaging and interesting 

This new crime novel by Michael Connelly is a real page-turner!


To be a heavy read  = to be difficult to read

I had to read ‘Macbeth’ at school, but it was such a difficult read.


To be a tear-jerker = to be very emotional and makes you cry

This novel is a based on a true story of love found and love lost, it’s a real tear-jerker.


To flip through a book = to read quickly, not looking at the details 

I am just flipping through this recipe book to find something to cook tonight 


To be on the edge of your seat = to have a feeling of suspense

That new novel by Stephen King had me on the edge of my seat.

Books

To be a scatterbrain = to be forgetful or absent-minded

My maths teacher is a real scatterbrain, she always forgets what homework she has given us.


To have a memory like a sieve /sɪv/ = to forget things easily and quickly.

I have a memory like a sieve, I can’t even remember what I had for dinner last night!


To fall through the cracks = to be forgotten by a system

Too many children with disabilities fall through the cracks in the education system. Then they can’t find a job because they have no qualifications.


To be on another planet = to be forgetful or absent-minded (living in your own world).

My sister left her keys in her flat yesterday and was locked out. I think she is on another planet sometimes.

Forgetting

To be a chip off the old block = when a child is very similar to their parents.

He will be a great teacher because he is so patient, just like his father. He really is a chip off the old block 


Family first!  =  family should always come before anything else.

I can’t go out tonight, I need to spend time with my wife and daughter family first, you know!


Blood is thicker than water  = family relationships are stronger than any other type of relationship.

Even though we've had our differences, I'll always be there for my sister. Blood is thicker than water, after all.


To be like two peas in a pod = to be very similar, in appearance or personality  

My sister and I both love staying at home with a good book, we are like two peas in a pod.

Family

To be full of twists and turns = to have sudden and surprising changes

This film has such a good story, the plot is full of twists and turns, and you never know what is going to happen next.


To be a flop  =  To be a failure (for a film) 

Unfortunately, the latest movie in the Marvel series was a total flop, fans hated it and it didn’t make much money.


To steal the show = To perform better than anyone else in the film

Brad Pitt's performance in 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' really stole the show for me.


The plot thickens = the situation in which the story becomes more complicated or suspenseful.  

I thought I knew who the killer was, but then the plot thickened and I was completely surprised by the ending.

To be tickled pink = to be very happy 

I was tickled pink when I finally managed to pass my IELTS test.



To be in your element  =  to be in a situation that you like and where you can perform well

I am really in my element when I am playing the guitar, I just let go and can really express my feelings well. 



To be music to my ears = to be something you are very pleased to hear 

The news of the Manchester United winning the Premier League was music to my ears



To be like a dog with two tails =  to be very happy about something  

After getting accepted to his dream university, my friend was like a dog with two tails

To curb loneliness  = to reduce the feeling of being alone
Many retired people keep pet dogs to curb their loneliness


To keep you company  = to be with you so you are not alone
My grandmother had a pet cat to keep her company after my grandad past away (=died)


A sense of well-being = a feeling of being happy and well
Some pets nowadays are called ‘emotional support animals’ because they can help give their owners a sense of well-being.


To mingle with others = to meet and socialise with other people
Many young people get a pet dog, so they can mingle with others in the park and make new friends.

off-the-peg clothes = all standard sizes, not specially made for you
I usually wear off-the-peg clothes as they are cheaper than tailor-made ones.

I love this dress as it fits like a glove

The only problem with new shoes is that they take a few days to wear in.
