To be a scatterbrain = to be forgetful or absent-minded

My maths teacher is a real scatterbrain, she always forgets what homework she has given us.


To have a memory like a sieve /sɪv/ = to forget things easily and quickly.

I have a memory like a sieve, I can’t even remember what I had for dinner last night!


To fall through the cracks = to be forgotten by a system

Too many children with disabilities fall through the cracks in the education system. Then they can’t find a job because they have no qualifications.


To be on another planet = to be forgetful or absent-minded (living in your own world).

My sister left her keys in her flat yesterday and was locked out. I think she is on another planet sometimes.

Forgetting

To be full of twists and turns = to have sudden and surprising changes

This film has such a good story, the plot is full of twists and turns, and you never know what is going to happen next.


To be a flop  =  To be a failure (for a film) 

Unfortunately, the latest movie in the Marvel series was a total flop, fans hated it and it didn’t make much money.


To steal the show = To perform better than anyone else in the film

Brad Pitt's performance in 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' really stole the show for me.


The plot thickens = the situation in which the story becomes more complicated or suspenseful.  

I thought I knew who the killer was, but then the plot thickened and I was completely surprised by the ending.

Movies

To be tickled pink = to be very happy 

I was tickled pink when I finally managed to pass my IELTS test.



To be in your element  =  to be in a situation that you like and where you can perform well

I am really in my element when I am playing the guitar, I just let go and can really express my feelings well. 



To be music to my ears = to be something you are very pleased to hear 

The news of the Manchester United winning the Premier League was music to my ears



To be like a dog with two tails =  to be very happy about something  

After getting accepted to his dream university, my friend was like a dog with two tails

Happiness

The other day I met up with my friend Mr. Grumble and we went shopping together. 
He was looking for a new phone so we went around a local shopping mall and he started grumbling about the price of the phones, about it being a rip-off (too expensive), about the quality. 
In the end, he was whingeing so much that I decided to take him for a coffee and a snack just to perk up (cheer up / to be happier / in a better mood), but then he started harping on about the coffee. It's too cold, it's too weak. 
Oh dear some people they're just never happy.

Mr. Grumble: IELTS Listening Task (Complaints)

To catch up with someone = to meet up with a friend and get all the latest news about their life

Whenever I go back to the UK, I like to catch up with friends and family

To keep you company  = to be with you so you are not alone
My grandmother had a pet cat to keep her company after my grandad past away (=died)


A sense of well-being = a feeling of being happy and well
Some pets nowadays are called ‘emotional support animals’ because they can help give their owners a sense of well-being.


To mingle with others = to meet and socialise with other people
Many young people get a pet dog, so they can mingle with others in the park and make new friends.

off-the-peg clothes = all standard sizes, not specially made for you
I usually wear off-the-peg clothes as they are cheaper than tailor-made ones.

I love this dress as it fits like a glove

To wear in (for new clothes, e.g. shoes, jacket) = to wear something new until it feels comfortable
The only problem with new shoes is that they take a few days to wear in.

As a teacher, I don’t have to follow a strict dress code, but I need to be smart

When I buy shirts, I usually go for long-sleeved ones

Clothes

To dig your heels in = to stick to your idea or plan, despite pressure to change
I am going to pass IELTS and study abroad. Even though my family prefer me to stay at home, I am going to dig my heels in.

To go to great lengths = do everything possible to achieve something 
I’m ready to go to great lengths to get this job.

To fight tooth and nail = to try hard to get something (especially when others are trying to stop you)
He had to fight tooth and nail to become president of this company, it wasn’t easy.

No bed of roses = used when a situation is not as pleasant as it seems
It’s great now I have my Master’s degree, but studying everyday whilst working at the same time was no bed of roses.
