Victim survivors and women's advocacy groups are launching a campaign today   calling for trauma to be recognised as natural response to gender based violence  and for it to be treated as an injury.

It's part of the global campaign 16 days of activism.

The campaign calls for a range of trauma-specific evidence-based therapies  to be funded through the Medicare Benefits Schedule    and for 20 community-based Women's Trauma Recovery Centres to be established across Australia.

Clinical Psychiatrist and founder of Doctors Against Violence Towards Women, Karen Williams says recognising trauma care through the Medicare Benefits Schedule is essential.

The creators of a surfing program credited with saving the lives of traumatised Defence Force veterans are hoping to win support from the federal government to roll the program out around Australia.

The Veterans Surfing Project at Gerroa has supported more than 200 veterans with P-T-S-D and other conditions. 

Greg Williams joined two years ago and says the surf medicine saved his life.:
