Casino of Montréal presents the 21st edition of the 24 Hours of Vinyl, part of the official Nuit Blanche in Montréal programming.

The world’s first “around the clock” musical marathon dedicated to vinyl records & DJ culture returns for its unmissable annual edition at the Nuit Blanche in Montréal.

Since 2011, in over 20 editions around the world (London, New York, San Francisco, Toronto, Paris, Vancouver), the event has showcased over 200 DJ’s and record collectors.

For the 21st edition we present a musical trip around the clock with some of Montreal’s best DJs coming together to celebrate the love of vinyl records with this marathon created by the team behind Music Is My Sanctuary.

Over 12 DJs will relay using only vinyl records for 24 consecutive hours to which dancers and music lovers are invited to boogie from the comfort of their house. A full day focused on the discovery and sharing of music without borders, from jazz to electronic and soul.

Born and raised in Montréal, Canada, DJ SUGARFACE BELFO is an Egyptian-Portuguese lovechild inspired by ancestral rhythms, funky basslines, and infectious grooves from world beats, house, funk and psychedelic soul. 

Co-founder of Flat Cola, a non-profit initiative supporting female DJs, SUGARFACE BELFO spearhead International Women’s DJ, an online festival and conference with local and online radio, such as CJLO (Montreal), Radio Paax (Mexico City), and Radio Flouka (Paris), spotlighting amazing female DJs from around the world!

"From ethereal textures to downtempo bass, deep house, and beautiful African rhythms amalgamated in electronic music, this mix honours the works (and reworks) of fabulous female producers whose art I greatly respect and admire. Whether they be representing my hometown of Montréal or friendly encounters met through my work with Flat Cola, I have been fortunate to exchange with many of these great women on a professional, if not personal, level. It is my honour and privilege to share their works with you today."

DJ Rhythm & Hues presents a special extended set in tribute to the pantheon of Black and Afro-influenced music from across the ages. From Billy Paul to Caiphus Semenya, Nina Simone to Steel Pulse and back, this is a mix drenched in some choice soul, hip-hop, R&B, funk, reggae and afro music, all around the #blacklivesmatter theme. 

"If history lives through its retelling, then so does music. Musicians of all creeds have found solace and sanctity in the revisiting, revamping, and retelling of songs, melodies and rhythms of days past, whose themes are universal; a phenomenon all the more important given the unfortunate fact that history is wont to repeat itself. 

It is with some sadness that I remark that The Roots’ cover of the African-American freedom song “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round" still rings relevant today. That the reprise by iSWHAT?! of Charles Mingus' “Fables of Faubus”, a scathing jazz riposte to Arkansas governor Orval E. Faubus (who notoriously deployed the National Guard to prevent the integration of the Little Rock Nine in white schools in 1957) still speaks truth to the systematized racism, violence and oppression that insidiously pervades Western society.

That songs like Bob Marley’s anti-war treatise “War," based on a speech made by Haile Selassie in 1963, or Fela Anikulapo Kuti's “Sorrow, Tears and Blood," a reference to both the 1976 Soweto Uprising and the raid on Fela’s Kalakuta Republic by the Nigerian police, still resonate with current day events, rather than as reminders of distant, harsher times. 

These songs speak to legacies of slavery, colonialism, and cultural imperialism and compel us to insist that #blacklivesmatter. This mix is dedicated to the memory of Anthony Griffin and the victims of police brutality.”

#BlackLivesMatter mixtape - dj rhythm & hues

This first half is what i'm calling a "Street & Soul" set with a mixture of new funky remixes to old soulful sounds. Songs of sexuality, love, life, and revolution. From Montreal to Bahia, Spanish Town, NYC, Philly, Tessalit, and Timbuktu through hip hop, disco, infectious grooves and psychedelic mind trips, ending with 'White Rabbit' by Jefferson Airplane, my longtime favourite (and my go-to karaoke song). 

We continued the second set with Alkalino - 'Wonderful Man' into afrobeat, afro/latin house, kuduro, dancehall, and sexy two-step edits. 

Thank you to Claire, Hubert, and the Ctrl Room family and friends for keeping this beautiful energy alive.
