Kellie Lloyd – the bass-playing heartbeat of Brisbane’s beloved indie rock institution Screamfeeder for over 25 years – steps into the spotlight this August with a translucent six-track solo EP, appropriately titled Fragile States.
 
It is the first new solo material from Lloyd since her acclaimed second album Magnetic North, released in 2012, and collects material drawn from several different recording sessions between 2013–2015.
 
The six songs reflect the variety of circumstances in which they were recorded, with the first three songs based on guitar and the others, including the eight-minute “Tunnel Music”, on piano.
 
Two songs have been previously released, but are now next to impossible to find. “Scene Of The Crime”, the hookiest and hardest-rocking song here, originally appeared on a Mere Noise Singles Club 7”, with Branko Cosic on drums. “Paradigms” was also a singles club release, for Brisbane institution Tym’s Guitars.
 
Lloyd describes Fragile States as “basically a collection of things recorded over the last couple of years that were never really going to be anything, until they came together.
 
“They were just random recording sessions. They all had a purpose, but there was never a thread. The piano songs were recorded as part of a university project at Gasworks; Darek Mudge produced them. They were a prelude to recordings I did with another band, A Savage God, with Alex Gillies, Geordie Stafford and Cam Smith.”
 
It was when Lloyd was putting together another band, called Majestic Horses, that she assembled the songs to bring to the group. “I decided they sounded so good together, and the Majestic Horses project was slow-moving, so I decided to release this so I could play some solo shows.”
 
The results are a warm and beautiful collection of songs, by turns eerie, meditative and moody, which fans of Screamfeeder and Big Star’s 3rd alike should love.
 
Fragile States will be released worldwide digitally on 1 August and is available on CD distributed on Poison City, available for sale driectly from the artist via bandcamp and will be launched at the Sonic Masala Festival on 17 August at Greenslopes Bowls Club alongside Victoria’s TV Haze, Canberra’s Shoeb Ahmad and a raft of local Brisbane favourites.
