In this recording the sometimes harsh instrument seems at times tamed and then almost simultaneously released as it soars into the song with Will's world class performance revealing a playful, dancing aspect to the song.

Not unlike the country which inspired it.

By releasing on St Patricks Day a track inspired by Ireland, from an Irish descendent, with a rare duet on harmonicas from two young musicians at either end of the experience spectrum, we are hoping you enjoy this track and it's halcyon view of all things Irish, as much as the couple performing it in this new version. The original is available on Kelly's EP 'Far From Home'.

Will Pound, at the tender age of 26 was nominated in this year’s BBC 2 Folk Awards as Musician of the Year primarily for his distinctive Harmonica style, which has been carefully captured on this single.

The date of 17th March has been chosen primarily because the song is inspired by Kelly’s first visit to the Emerald Isle – the homeland of her grandmother. She was taken by the hospitality of the Irish, which inspired the song, as this quote explains :

“I wrote He Walked on the Side of the Sea after my first ever visit to Ireland.  My Grandmother was Irish, and I've always felt a strong connection to the Irish culture and especially Irish music.  While I was visiting there, someone told me I had an 'Irish face', and so came the lyric 'the island that gave me my smile'. It was after this trip, three years ago, that I began playing and then writing folk music, but only last year started performing my own songs in public.  Having stayed with my friend's family, on an island just off the coast of Donegal, this song champions the hospitality of the Irish people, along with the good humour, the accent, the music, the drinking and the chivalry” Kelly Oliver.

Kelly Oliver is fresh onto the folk scene, having only started performing her original material in May 2013. She was encouraged by Keiron and Maureen Jones at Hitchin Folk Club, who after inviting her to support Chris and Kellie While and then Miranda Sykes, gave her the opportunity to open for Luke Jackson at Cambridge Folk Festival this year in the club tent under the auspices of their club. She has since also supported Luke Jackson at Uxbridge Folk Club, The Urban Folk Quartet at Hitchin and is looking forward to suppporting Gilmore and Roberts on 23rd March and Musician of the Year nominee Ross Ainslie at the Flag in Watford on April 5th.

 

From her base in Hertfordshire, Kelly taught herself the Harmonica to add depth to her guitar led songs and has attracted sponsorship from Hohner who will be the sole supplier of her harmonicas from March 2014.

 

Kelly's opportunities to perform took another large step forward when she won a competition to perform at Folkstock, which meant that she opened the Folkstock Presents stage at the festival which was organised by Helen Meissner's Folkstock Arts Foundation. As a result of that performance, she has now been embraced by Folkstock because she embodies everything the foundation was set out to achieve and is enjoying the varied activities which this presents.

Kelly is now pursuing her musicial career full time.

 

Kelly's first BBC Radio slot was when she was invited to chat and perform live on BBC Three Counties Radio in a lunch time show in December. She was interviewed and performed live on Gaby Roslin's BBC London sunday afternoon show in February. Other radio interviews, sessions, blogs, videos and reviews are lining up.

 

Kelly Oliver released her debut EP onto itunes and the like on 14th February. Far From Home is a five track EP showcasing Kelly's crystal clear voice and was produced by 18yr old Lauren Deakin Davies for Folkstock Records.

Kelly is releasing this fourth track from the EP, He Walked on the Side of the Sea, with Will Pound guesting ( nominated in this year's BBC 2 Folk Awards for Musician of the Year ) on March 17th 2014.

Kelly Oliver is a singer-songwriter, guitarist and harmonicist, described by The Times as an artist who 'blends traditional with bold, indie-pop'.  Her debut album 'This Land', funded by an Emerging Excellence Award by Help Musicians UK, gained a 4* review from The Telegraph and her second album 'Bedlam' was included in The Sunday Times Essential New Releases, was in Paul Sexton's Top 20 Albums of the Year in Prog Magazine and was nominated for Best Album from a Female Artist 2016 by Folkwords.  Her last five singles have all gained BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music airplay and she performed her summer single 'Rio' on BBC One's Sunday Morning Live for her first national TV appearance.  Kelly tours the UK predominantly as a solo artist and was awarded Best Female Solo Artist and Breakout Artist in the 2015/2016 NMG Awards as well as winning Best Female Artist 2016 in the FATEA Awards.  She attended the 2017 Folk Alliance International in Kansas, USA, as one of their Official Showcase Artists and has performed in Europe on a debut tour of Germany and in Portugal at Costa del Folk Festival.  Festival highlights include a Club Tent Showcase at Cambridge Folk Festival, Folk By The Oak, Camp Bestival and Standon Calling plus others.  She has supported artists including Cara Dillon, Phil Beer, Barbara Dixon and CC Smugglers and played live with Dave Swarbrick, Luke Jackson and Lukas Drinkwater among others. 

Kelly is releasing her third studio album, 'Botany Bay', on 28th September 2018.  'Botany Bay' is a full, traditional English folk album, made up entirely of traditional folk songs collected in Kelly's home county of Hertfordshire.  The songs have all been arranged by Kelly and her producer Stu Hanna, with Stu's vibrant and punchy production complimenting Kelly's contemporary and distinctive style.  The album features a prestigious list of guest musicians, including Phil Beer, Luke Jackson, Lukas Drinkwater and Jamie Francis, Toby Shaer and Evan Carson.
